Why Women Lift

I just do....
I love to see my progress and the fact that I can lift as much or more than a lot of guys.
My shoulders and arms look amazing...my *kitten* still needs a bit of work mind
But I don't mind Cardio either but not boring treadmill stuff but things like cardio circuits, tabata and HIIT0 -
oh- being the boss who rips 3 plates off the floor for reps-that's a good reason too.
one day.
<le sigh>
also- doing pull ups- wildly satisfying- not sure why- but it's amazaballs.
and the *kitten*- I think everyone does it for the *kitten* (cue song)0 -

What it does for my body.
What it does for my bones. (have osteopeenia)
When my hubby looks at me.....:blushing:
Muscles, love those things.
I still do cardio......love walking. :flowerforyou:0 -
1) I want to set myself up for a healthy life
2) I like the "o_O" looks I get when I swing a heavy kettlebell or goblet squat with a big old dumbbell at the gym
3) I like feeling/being strong.
4) It gives me confidence
5) It's giving me my sexyback. :bigsmile:0 -
Because it builds a long, lean strong beautiful body. You will not bulk.0

To lead a better life.
With a strong body, I can do more and feel good doing it.0 -
I lift because I'm lazy and don't like cardio.
I lift because it's physically and mentally satisfying to me.
I lift because I can.0 -
I lift because I have osteopenia, and wanted to keep it from getting worse. 18 months later, not only has it not gotten worse, but it's gone from my lower body and improved in my spine and shoulders. I'm gonna keep lifting.0
-
Because women that lift and have muscles are sexy!!!!!!
This0 -
I'm not a woman, but I think building tha booty is one of the reasons.0
-
I've never felt more proud of myself. Lifting gives a serious sense of accomplishment, especially after seeing my body change week to week! Best decision I ever made.0
-
because it's awesome.... and I hate cardio.
I don't care about the health benefits- I love lifting. Period.
And muscles.
I love muscles.
Exactly this!0 -
Too many reasons to even begin to list. A great one for me however, has been the ability to throw my 38lb toddler over my shoulder to carry him out of the store when he's being difficult. The looks I get are hilarious, because he's huge.0

To all the women who lift,
Did you start lifting after you had lost weight, or did you lift TO lose weight??
I really do like lifting heavy for all of the reasons above, but mostly because I love seeing my progress in how much weight I'm able to move ... but I am also obese -- clinically, medically, all of it. I also notice that I start to look more bulky when I lift since I still have alot of fat on my body.
My question is: Will I lose weight/fat/however you want to break it down, by lifting heavy?0 -
Just to clarify, when I say I look "bulky", I know it is because the muscle is getting bigger underneath the fat ... but all you can see is the fat!0

I started when I was 235lbs, and have been lifting ever since. You absolutely will lose weight and fat doing so. It might not be the fastest way, but it is, in my opinion, completely worth the slower progress.0 -
Something else I think about:
Many of us grew up disliking our bodies because they weren't skinny enough, or top heavy enough, or curvy or lean or whatever.
Being at a healthy weight is great for appearance and health, but that number of the scale I think dominates and overshadows any other way of measuring our self-worth.
A huge part of lifting for me was learning to like and appreciate my body a different way. I can say when I started this, I was "lifting" 2.5 lbs, now I'm lifting 30..and it is all my effort and determination.0 -
I see tons of threads about woman lifting.0

Thank you! That is encouraging ... as that is around the same weight I am starting out at! I've been thinking of working with a personal trainer to push me to my max and to help get results quicker0
-
I lift so that all 4'9 of me can carry my sleeping 46pd 7yo up a flight of stairs to bed
I am smaller now than I ever was at a lower weight when I was younger, and that's after having two kids. That's pretty awesome in itself0 -
It helps me to get through the endurance event that is my day to day life.
With a booty that makes men pull crying faces and do little dances.0 -
I usually do Zumba for cardio but am interested in how to get started on lifting weights. I'm in my late 50's and don't want flabby arms or tummy. What's a good web site to learn from for beginners? Thanks!
Good for you for taking an interest :drinker: !
A couple good resources you can google:
- Starting Strength
- Stronglifts 5x5
- New Rules of Lifting for Women (book)
If you have access to a gym, I highly reccomend hiring a personal trainer for 3-5 sessions to get you started and teach you proper form. I would also come prepared with the workouts you want to learn (one of the above) so they don't start you off on the wrong foot (i.e. lifting pink dumbbells).
Good luck to you, you won't regret it!
I totally agree! I have only been lifting since October and can see a big difference in my strength and body. A trainer will help you with proper form. I've actually been approached at the gym and told you lift an awful lot for a woman!0 -
I have been doing Stronglifts for months, and I don't feel like it's doing anything for my butt. It's flabbier than ever since Ive lost weight. Hoping I can still firm it up somehow......0

The inches coming off and things tightening up are pretty slow for me as well. I'm moving a lot of weight, too. I can tell a difference in my arms, my butt is lifting up and my back fat is slowly going away. I'm also seeing muscles that I've never had before. I've been lifting since the end of November. Just keep at it. It's slower for some people.0 -
I started lifting because my doctor recommended it as I have bone density issues.
I carry on lifting as I like the changes I am seeing in my body.0
