How freqently do you change your goal calories (using TDEE)

So I think I read somewhere back when I first calculated TDEE that you're supposed to re-calculate every 5lbs loss or something. How frequently do you re-calculate? I've lost 11lbs (the first 6 were using MFP calculator) so I've lost 5 using TDEE. Should I go in with my new weight and recalculate? or wait until I've lost more.

I want to know, what do YOU do.

I haven't recalculated my TDEE in 6months...I will at 10lbs...keep in mind I was close pre vacation but gained 4lbs...so looking at doing it at the end of march.

I think that I ended up recalculating mine every 5-7 lbs. I had planned to recalculate every 10 lbs, but I was losing weight faster than I expected, so I was both recalculating and lowering my deficit- trying to find the right activity level was hard for me.

I'm now trying to figure out my TDEE for maintenance with no extra workouts- just my daily 3 mile walks with the dog- and I'm still seeing a very slight downward weight trend- apparently I have a tendency to underestimate my activity level. I like TDEE because I like having the same goal everyday, but finding TDEE is hard! haha

I just did mine and the site said every 5 pounds to redo it.

MFP has you recalculate every 10 lbs. I don't think the exact lb amount matters much as long as you do it regularly.

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (also known as "maintenance calories" it is the place where you wouldn't gain or lose). It is the method most weight loss systems use, eat less than you expend.

MFP is not a TDEE method, it calculates what you would need to lose weight without any exercise, then you eat more when you do exercise.
  • Oh okay. Thanks! I'm trying to eat very low carb and I'm not sure how much protein vs fat I need to be eating. Any help??

TDEE Is total daily energy expenditure. So I tell a calculator my gender, my age, my height, my weight, and how many times per week I work out, and it tells me ON AVERAGE how many calories I burn each day. So I don't eat back my exercise calories* and I get to eat the same number of calories each day. So I don't have to worry about how many calories I'm going to burn working out tonight.

    * The only time you might eat back some exercise calories is if you tell it you work out 2x per week and one week you work out like 5 times per week, then you need to eat more.

There are much smarter people on this site than me and they may be able to explain this better for you.

Damn, you beat me to it and did a better job.

You should probably start your own thread, you'll get a lot more help that way :)

Here's a good calculation site to check out, which says you should adjust every 5 lbs lost for continued loss. It will also give you your TDEE. http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/

I started out with MFP suggestions on daily intake of calories and wasn't seeing much of a change but once I found this site and adjusted my calorie intake based on the calculations, the scale started to move. I'm 9 lbs down and just made my first deficit change. I waited until 9/10 lb loss because I wasn't sure I wouldn't go over calories and put my self back, but now I know I can handle the 100 calorie drop from my daily intake.
