how often do you get new running shoes?

i am just curious -
i have been buying a new pair every spring, wear them outdoor running all spring/summer/fall and on treadmill in winter then buy new. but i only run 30 - 40 miles a month.

so do people base shoe replacement on miles run - or on tread life

-- for treadmill running does tread on shoes really make a difference, i would hate to be wearing out new shoes on the stupid treadmill before i get to hit the pavement.
-- this may be a stupid question to some, but i am a novice runner, just trying to figure out how to be better.

I have only just started to run a couple of weekends ago, previous to this it was all walking. I have worn our 3 pairs of good running shows in that time (Asics) and today have bought a pair of Salomon trail running shoes as my latest Asics are mostly white.
Not sure how far I have been with my shoes in the past but they have ended up with worn soles and uppers starting to break down. I have tried to have one pair getting to the end fo their life whilst I break in a new pair, this is the first time I have had 2 pairs of new shows at the same time to alternate.

I change mine every 1000 km or 600 miles. I do not wear the shoes I run in for anything else but running. I change them sooner if I start getting knee or joint pain. Smaller people or efficient runners will need to replace less frequently.

It all depends on you, the shoe, etc. but the rule I've always heard I'd 300 to 500 miles before it is broken down and not providing the support it is designed to. But, if the outside still looks good, has tread, etc., you can replace the insole to extend the life.

Hi, I run 3(ish) times a week usually about 12 miles per week but sometimes more and I go with the 3 - 500 miles guide or 6 - 9 months. Most of my running is outside but I would still count the treadmill miles as it would still compress the insole. I too look first to my shoes if I start to get any niggles.

    Hope this helps.

I run 6 days a week in 25+ mpw in the winter and more like 30-35 mpw and beyond in the brighter months. I rotate two pairs of shoes and replace based on feel. When i start getting low back pain and shin splints it's time for new shoes. That's usually around 400 miles or so.

A similar distance to others around 400 - 500 mile mark. When I start getting abnormal knee and back aches that's normally a sign. I do log all the mileage on my shoes so I can tell exactly how many miles they have done. Yes it's pedantic but it's information. My last pair of Kayano's did 482 miles before I replaced them. I have 3 pairs on the go at all times. 2 road pairs and a pair of trail shoes. I rotate the road shoes. I am planning to get some lighter weight ones for shorter runs soon though.

I too have 3-4 pairs on rotation. I run outside all year long (except in big snowstorm I'll use the treadmill) and log between 28-42 miles a weeks (115-170 miles a month). I buy a new pair every 3 months or so.

It's different for everyone depending on the surface you run on, the conditions the shoes are subjected to (snow, water ..) and your running pattern. I think heavier runners wear shoes faster too...

For me, I become achy when shoes need to be retired... I feel it in my articulations, my calves are tight etc etc... It's usually around 350 miles for me. I probably could stretch it out a bit but I can afford it, I LOVE new shoes and I prefer to avoid unnecessary injuries!

As I get close to 300 miles I get a new pair to start working in the rotation. The only exceptions are like last week when everything in the store was discounted and I couldn't pass up buying the newer model of my long-run shoe. I'll tuck them away for a couple of months until they are needed.

Approximately every 6 months; depends though. A few local runners do it based on miles I base it on color boredom and tread. Color boredom happens during the winter months when you grow tired of looking down at the same color sneakers(not very scientific but results vary ;) ) and the tread. We have a 1200 miler in the house and 500 miler(me, new to gauging equipment and running) but we tend to buy new shoes every 6 months.

Depends on the shoe, but 300-500 miles is standard. I keep track of the miles on my shoes, and usually, if I start to have aches and pains that I don't normally get, I check, and see that my shoes have reached the replacement stage.

I have four pairs of road shoes and one pair of trail shoes, I keep track of mileage and aim to retire shoes at about 500 miles.

By circulating the shoes I'm running in I'm avoiding the shock of change, so the shoes stay about 100 miles apart in terms of distance under them.

fwiw I'm doing 35-40km per week and working on 10Km speed at the moment

About every 400-500 miles. I try to wear that new pair on my shorter runs for a month before switching over and will keep the old ones in case the new ones give me trouble when I start wearing them for longer runs.

Every 300-400 miles for me usually ... plus I use my running app to track the distance on each pair in rotation by logging them in the notes section to take the guess work out of it.
