Heavy lifting

I've been reading a lot about heavy lifting for women and it's something I want to try, my problem is that I'm an hour away from a gym! Is this something I can do at home? I already use hand weights in 5lbs & 8 lbs which I realize aren't "heavy" but I've been doing high repetition curls, shoulder press, tricep dips as well as squats, lunges, push-ups, crunches etc. will that work as well? What equipment should I consider purchasing that won't break the bank? Also, I work out alone and don't want to kill myself, lol! Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

High rep stuff will build endurance mostly.

You need to be doing exercises where it's difficult to complete 6-8 reps.

With minimal equipment you could check out something like YAYOG (book and app), Convict Conditioning (book) or Never Gymless (Book). All contain strength training plans that utilise little-to-no equipment.

I'm starting out too, and I work out at home. I also use Daily Burn's online tomorrow, and I'll be starting a kettlebell programme as of tomorrow before I move on to using my partner's neglected weight set (if I can figure out how to use the damn bench). I'm using 5lbs at the moment - quite pathetic!

I also read The New Rules of Lifting for Women, and even if you don't end up following their workouts there's loads of invaluable information contained within - there's a good reason it keeps getting recommended here. High weight and not high repetition is the way, apparently.

    All the best!

You can often find benches, plates, bars cheap on places like Kijiji and craigs list...as for the rack build one...my husband built me one for less than 50$....with the help from our son.

Plates if bought new run about 1$ a lb...try to get steel. You wont need much to start with..maybe 100lbs but they won't last long so be prepared.

Yes, I've heard that's a great book, may have to get it! I'd forgotten about kettle ball, great idea!

Haha. That's why I go to a gym. D1ck's Sporting goods have good prices I heard.

Can't believe it's censored. When stupidity runs amok.

I'm following the new rules of lifting for women.
There are a couple moves that require gym equipment but it's easy enough to find a substitute move.
I can't afford to go to the gym at the moment so I do my workouts at home :)
All I bought was a weight set that came with dumbbells and a barbell. Cost me about £30, which is about $50 I think? So not overly expensive! Or you could always find some cheaper second-hand sets :)
