Antibiotics and obesity - are they linked

An interesting article in the NY Times which suggests a link between antibiotics and obesity. Food for thought.

    Interesting.

How about a study that shows 100% of obese people drink water. Therefore water causes obesity.

Yeah. Sounds as legit as the article.

There's some interesting new research around the gut microbiome and this looks at it from another angle. Thanks for posting. I'm going to have a look for the original article because I would like to see what they propose as cause and effect.

It's not that far fetched given that antibiotics can affect your gut bacteria, and certain gut bacteria are associated with obesity. It's definitely not a good reason to avoid antibiotics. Although it may be prudent to eat probiotics while you're on antibiotics, but we already knew that.

I thought it was interesting and well balanced. It wasn't attempting to make excuses for anyone or anything. It wasn't a correlation=causation type of article at all. Worth a read IMHO.

If antibiotics do affect our microbiomes, that's something that is important for us to know, right? This has potential impact on the health and growth of children as well as adults. It also points to interesting possibilities for future medicines as well.
