Do any of you have experience with weight loss supplements?

I tried Hydroxycut.. I think it messed up my bladder because after I started taking it feels like I have to pee all the time (TMI, sorry). I had some sort of Japanese tea before, it worked rather well. It was a weight-loss/beauty tea, it prevented 25%-30% of fat being stored, it suppressed hunger, speeds your metabolism, and it apparently clears your skin (my skin didn't really have any imperfections so I'm not sure how effective that part was, but it did help me lose weight faster, like an extra 2-3 pounds a week, and it stayed off). The Green Coffee Bean stuff didn't work for me... and well, that was all I tried.

What have *you* tried and what was your results?

Never tried weight loss supplements. I've been tempted but they all seem expensive and you can achieve the same results with keeping on top of your diet and exercise regime :)

Plus I've got a history of laxative abuse so I think it would be kind of triggering for me...

Counting calories, eating at a deficit, and eating what I like if it fits my macros. See ticker below. I kind of like losing weight the old fashioned way while eating chips and chocolate.

In all seriousness, pills and supplements don't work. Hard work and eating at a deficit do. :drinker:

Yeah. I tried hCG, when you could buy it OTC. (Authentic tinctures of hormone compound mixture.) And yes, it works. It helps you drop weight very noticeably more quickly than a simple fast. I did several "rounds" of the diet, over a year's time and lost 30 lbs. I got so burned out on binging then fasting, though, I simply cannot stand to diet anymore, I go into binge mode within just a few days.

The diet DOES ruin your metabolism, you will bounce right back to your original weight unless you keep doing another round now and then to take your weight down again. This is the truth of the matter.

Those pushing the diet claim the weight will stay off but they are lying. I was on a support group where ladies came back time and time again saying they had gained back the weight and were doing another round to take it back off again. :( So unless you intend to fast for the rest of your life, don't even go there. HCG is a lie.

One other thing, hCG is a fertility drug and will also cause havoc with ovarian cysts, which I have heard are intensely painful.

I enjoy taking the high caffeine pills pre workout but other than that they are mostly a diuretic.

However I have taken the commander go pack and saw increased results. When I started this journey my first month before MFP I was all natural low calorie diet and lost about 8 pounds that month. A friend at work told me about commander and I got it. The next month without any other changes I lost 14.8 pounds. The following month not on commander I "only" lost 7.4 pounds. So March 1 I went and got another pack to see if it works out for me this time around. I will let you all know that the first week of the month I lost 2.8 pounds! Next weigh in is tomorrow so I will update again.

I think people make the mistake of thinking supplements are supposed to replace will power or motivation. That's not what they do. Maybe some of them don't do anything. Maybe some of them just offer a placebo effect.

I've been taking Doctor's Preferred Weight Loss 4 for about 3 months. I've lost 30 pounds. Before that I had already lost 57 pounds over over the course of 10 months.

Now it's possible that my weight loss has accelerated because I've gotten even more serious about eating right and exercise, but I definitely think these pills have given me some energy and assisted with my metabolism. If the affect is just a placebo, fine, I am going to keep taking them til I get where I want to be cause it is working lol.

Anyway, the 4 ingredients are: Garcinia Cambogia, Raspberry Ketone, White Kidney Bean Extract, and Cayenne Pepper Extract.

A few years back I tried a fat burner that I LOVED...lost weight like crazy and it had something in it that was like a mood enhancer..and no "crash" feeling. About a month after I ran out and was going to re-order them, I found out they were removed from the market due to accusations that the manufacturer may have been adding a form of meth to them. People were going a bit crazy on them. Thankfully I was fine and didn't have any of the side effects that others reported, but that whole experience made me realize that I could have been hurt by those pills. A risk I would never ever take again. Scary.
  • I do use supplements, but not quick fixes like fat burners, HCG, etc. What I do use though are these:

Green Tea Extract: Mostly for shedding abdominal fat, but helps shed fat in general.
Fish Oil: For Omega-3's that I am not getting by not eating enough fish.
BCAA's- To increase muscle retention and maximize fat loss while on my calorie deficit diet.
Glutamine - For energy levels, endurance, prevent muscle breakdown, and speed up recovery from heavy weight lifting.
Creatine - For immediate energy, increase muscle size and to promote complete recovery after intense exercising.
L-Carnitine - For fat loss, appetite supressant, slowing down of bone loss (I am post-menopausal), increased strength and ability to lift heavier weights.
    Digestive Enzyme
    Multi-Vitamin
    Vitamin C
    Vitamin E

Do I think you need all of these, not really unless you are wanting to gain good muscle size, otherwise for weight loss most of these are fantastic - and good for your body :)

I should probably add that I eat a very healthy diet (high protein, low carb), maintain a calorie deficit daily, and work-out 6 days a week, 5 of them are intense weight lifting.

Before I joined MFP, I looked at a few supplements. They all seemed to say things like "use in conjunction with a reduced calorie diet and regular exercise" or caused anal leakage. I also looked into herbalife (too expensive) and It Works (the seller herself told me the results were only temporary).

Then I joined MFP and learned I could eat whatever I wanted as long as it fit into my calorie goal. I found physical activities that I enjoyed, and they got easier and more fun as I got fitter.
It was free, and it worked like a charm.

You don't need a supplement to be successful.

I lost 50 lbs in 2 min after taking the supplements. Too bad, I realized I was weighing myself with the scale on the carpet after taking the pill. I gained back all the weight when the scale returned to the hard surface. Pills don't work, you need to figure out whats the best way to naturally lose the weight.

I have experience using discipline as supplement. It works pretty well.
  • I have tried so many, slim quick is one i ussually go back to. i have also tried other suppliments, and i always had a bad reaction and i never saw results, but even me eating right and exercising im still not losing weight, but i found out its due to a medical condition and i will have to go on medication. My brother takes lots of pills and eats right and goes to the gym and has had a huge success. I would say if you found a supplement that works then keep going at it but just remember to eat right and exercise. Maybe try slim quick, my other friends have taken it and said they have had a huge success. I gave up on pills, and fad diets. Juicing is one of the worst but everyone has there thing right!? im just living a normal life, but some supplements are not bad for you. Anyways to answer your question i would try slim quick.

I found using a bicycle several times a week after meals to be very effective.(*)

seriously, stop trying to find the quick fix. There is no magic pill for weight loss. Starving like in your other post doesn't work in the long term either. for real, get some help. you seem to have a horrible relationship with food

Honestly, I have tried Hydroxycut on and off and it does work for me.
    HOWEVER.
It is definitely not a long term solution.
When I take it, I do not allow myself to slack.
I still eat at a healthy calorie deficit and I still workout at least 4 days a week.
And I don't plan on ever buying it again. For the most part, it is a waste of money.
It does speed the weight loss progress up at first, especially if you are just starting your weight loss journey.
Although honestly, it probably just helps to shed water weight.
But its not something you NEED to lose weight.
Absolutely nothing replaces hard work and dedication.
Not shakes or pills filled with potentially deadly chemicals.
Just good 'ol sweat and tears!
