Calorie Deficit Strength Training

My goal isn't so much weight loss as trimming down a bit, (I say I want to lose ten pounds, mostly I just want to tighten and tone, maybe maybe go down a size) I have MFP set to lose ~ .5/week and just started the 10 week program from the You Are Your Own Gym app.
I'm just curious about if being in a calorie deficit is a good idea while trying to build lean muscle. I've tried to google it and mostly get body building things that say no... but those are mostly people trying to actually get bigger, which is not my goal at all. Should I keep with my deficit, set the maintenance, not worry about it until I lose 10 pounds?
Thanks!

I would do TDEE-10%.
You are able to build muscle when in a small deficit... especially as a noob!0
