Overcoming binge eating

So I have suffered from binge eating problems for many many years of my life. And yes, I say 'suffered' because it's horrible. I can honestly say it has negatively impacted my physical and mental health in a myriad of ways.

I've had long, long periods of a vicious cycle of self loathing, which I numbed with copious amounts of the wrong foods, which of course lead to weight gain and subsequently more self loathing.

And then in the more recent past I would binge, then go through periods of restriction to compensate, often over-exercising and abusing laxatives as well.

My main focus on this journey to health has therefore been on developing a more healthy relationship with food. A resource I've found really helpful is Overcoming Binge Eating by Dr. Christopher Fairburn. Most of the steps in the self-help section are rather common sense but being told to do it by someone else makes me stick to it.

I've been binge free for over a month now and life is so much more joyful.


I just basically wanted to reach out to anyone here on MFP who has/has had binge eating problems and say that overcoming your issues is possible and you can definitely change your relationship with food for the better! It's hard but it's absolutely worth it.

    I am strrrrrrrruggling and trying so hard every day to beat BED and achieve the health and fitness goals I want in a nurturing way and just BE HAPPY. Which seems silly to people who haven’t experienced an ED because to them food can’t control how they feel apart from “I’m hungry” “I’m full”. But to me food can make me feel like a loser, ugly, fat, stupid, weak, worthless and I desperately want to end that!

    Congratulations on beating your demons, I hope I’m not too far behind!
