like - a certain type of food, or just over your daily limit? or do you have to feel sick or something to count?

to me a binge is too much of any one type of food. like today, a milkshake made with oreos, ice cream and flake bars my brother made - 200ml of it! so yeah was wondering about everyone else?

something that looks good or feels good in an ad or a Hollywood movie but makes you feel like crap in real life.

Anything I eat after a big meal. I shouldn't be eating when I am not hungry.

well to me a binge is when you eat without realizing it and keep eating until you are actually sick...I mean vomitting...anything else is over eating

Like the milk shake you made it as a choice.

any time I go way over calorie count- or don't bother counting and just eat all the things.

I don't emotionally binge- but I have days where I just throw it all to the wind and eat all the things.

    next day back on track.

To me a binge is tied to emotions and there is a loss of control and large quantities of food. If I choose to enjoy a cookie or two that put me over my goal, even if I'm not hungry...not a binge. If I stuff my face with a dozen cookies in a kind of trance and feel like I literally cannot stop until I am about to vomit...binge. I'm usually standing in the corner of the kitchen when I binge, and I always hide the evidence (wrappers, empty plates, etc). Tons of shame and guilt. That's my personal view of it.

Thanks to others here on MFP, I now recognize a true binge is part of an eating disorder. I feel fortunate that I have not experienced that in my life.

For me though, using a more casual definition of "binge"...it's when I plan to have 2 slices of pizza and 1 Redd's Apple Ale, and wind up changing my mind and having 3-4 slices and 2 apple ales followed up with a vodka shot and going over my calories for the day by a couple hundred. That doesn't happen too often.

My most recent "binge" (again using the casual definition) was when I purchased some Easter chocolate (Cadbury eggs and a wedding cake egg) from Walgreen's with the plan to eat 1 item per day for a few days and ate all 3 in one afternoon (around 400 calories). That is not the type of good planning and follow-through I normally exhibit and I was a bit ashamed of my lack of self control, even though I stayed within my calories for the day.

However, I do like to try and stay positive. I learned from that experience that I should buy just one crème egg at a time ;-)

Coming from a history of ED, a "binge" is an emotionally-driven compulsive behavior. Anything else is over-eating or simply a lack of impulse control / discipline. It's like the difference between choosing to have a drink, becoming intoxicated or being an alcoholic. Bingeing really has very little to do with food, & you can binge without necessarily going over your daily calories, especially if you are restrictive or overly exertive at other times.

This happened to me last night. The best thing to do is just get back on track the next day.

To me, a binge would be an uncontrolled eating episode. Whatever the content, healthy or unhealthy is unimportant.

    It's a mental thing.
