i'm 5'4, just found out i'm 128 lbs. i'm ectomesomorph body type. i'm pretty skinny, but gain muscle faast, i have a LOT of muscle in my butts and legs, and a bit in my stomach area. i really want to get down to 115 again. oh also, i'm 20. female!
i'm hypoglycemic, and when my blood sugar gets low, i get STARVING, like literally, physically painfully hungry. and i also get dizzy and nauseous. i also have a pretty fast metabolism... -.-
i don't work out too much... i am more now that it's warmer. most of my physical activity comes from (sorry tmi!) intimacy with my boyfriend, ha! so decent amount, but not suuuuper active.
i'm trying to stay at 1200 cals a day...but omg it's hard. i keep just starving all the time!
i eat whole grains, fruits and veggies, eggs, protein bars, lean meat... but it's just never enough. my metabolism just gobbles it up and i'm hungry within 2 hours.
any advice? please!? this is so frustrating
My advice is to question your current assumptions about yourself.
um, assumptions? i see zero assumptions made?
In bold are the statements that I think you should seriously reconsider. I'm not trying to talk down to you, I'm not saying outright that you're wrong or whatever. I'm saying you should try to do some research on those things (serious research, not a blog post that sounds like it fits you perfectly) and make an educated assessment for yourself.
those are all actually things my doctor has told me. not something i just decided for myself lol. the only assumption was my exercise which i said earlier that i was uneducated of what constitutes as actual exercise.
and to whoever above, i'm not getting a freakin' six pack in a month or some crap, i gain muscle fast. as in quicker than others.
Your doctor seriously said you're an ectomesomorph? Have they not read any science since 1990?
But in all seriousness, if your doctor is legitimately telling you you have a super fast metabolism and gain muscle easily:
a.) Did he/she do hormone tests to determine this? and b.) Why would he/she then tell you 1200 calories is a "good amount"?
oh, not the ectomesomorph thing, no, i didn't read that part.
they didn't tell me 1200 calories, that's what MFP app told me when i plugged in some numbers.
and yeah i've had a ton of tests ran on me. for everything. i have a lot of health issues. i have hormone & thyroid issues. because i have polycystic kidney disease. mild but still there. my metabolism IS overly fast. and i DO gain muscle easily. i DO have hypoglycemia. would you like my life story?
The things I highlighted:
Fast Metabolism - Metabolism does vary from person to person, but not by the extreme amount some people may think. Calorie intake and activity level play a much larger role than your metabolism. I encourage you to look into this, and if your doctor told you that you have a fast metabolism to ask for further clarification.
Puts on muscle easily - This is anecdotal evidence, but the only people I've ever heard who claim to put on muscle easily don't have that much muscle mass to begin with (I'm comparing you with body builders and athletes or the like, that is not intended as an insult). I encourage you to do research in the kinesiology field. There's an extremely good chance that what you think of as fast muscle gain is actually other physiological responses entirely. If your doctor told you that you gain muscle easily...well I'd ask for his or her credentials and for more detail on what substantiates that claim.
Activity Level - I strongly encourage you to reassess the accuracy of your measurements when it comes to calorie intake and expenditure. This is a universal suggestion I have for everybody, because it's a very hard thing to do.0 -
seriously? i just don't get why all these people have to come in here and jump on my back and just assume i'm a dumb**** that has no idea what they're talking about.
i appreciate the people who say " oh you should actually do this much exercise" or "no it's not your metabolism you actually need more calories" without the whole "are you sure???" spiel.
i'm not just pulling things out of my *kitten*, i came on here for some legitimate advice so i can get healthy and in shape.
so apparently ectomesomorph things are innaccurate, MY BAD.
and apparently sex counts or no exercise (AGAIN, MY BAD), even though i said that i am active outside, but almost nobody seemed to care about that part.
so to everyone who's treating me like an idiot, thanks but no thanks, i'm trying to get advice, not negativity.
this is my fitness PAL not my fitness let's be rude.
Many of the things that you stated are extremely common MFP misconceptions, especially the "I gain muscle fast". That is why people are/were trying to point that out.
That's why having hormonal issues is a complete game changer, as the exercise you stated wouldn't add muscle...at all for the normal person.
Don't get mad at people trying to correct popular misconceptions for 99.9% of the population without knowing about said medical issues. That's trying to give advice, and that advice may have been directed a different way if we knew about the issues in the beginning.0 -

Well, my last statement was tongue-in-cheek. I haven't seen too much negativity or rudeness outside of you, hence my more jovial response initially. Passive-aggression isn't too kind, so it doesn't really lend someone to try and help.
But I will, because I'm in here, and I *am* one of those people familiar with endocrine disorders, hence why I asked. Not that you have given anything specific other than passive-aggressive taunts, but I will assume you have hyperthyroidism if your doctor says you have a fast metabolism? If that's the case, than you should work with your doctor on proper nutrition and make sure you get stabilized, as hyper actually does the opposite of lending to fast muscle growth (again, why I question it, and why I asked about testosterone). 1200 is too low, in general, for your height, weight, age, AND thyroid condition. Try doing the TDEE-20% or -10% method that others have suggested.
In regards to the "working out," you *did* say:i don't work out too much... i am more now that it's warmer. most of my physical activity comes from (sorry tmi!) intimacy with my boyfriend, ha! so decent amount, but not suuuuper active.
No one's ignoring you; your story changed. You said at the get-go that you're not very active, you're starting to become more active, but in general you "don't work out too much."

Its really hard to give you advice if you have health issues we don't know about. Pretty much all of the advice given is given on the basis you have no health issues. Throwing in hormone and thyroid issues changes everything. You can't expect us to know that, we can only go by the information provided to us.
Some people may be able to better give you advice if they are familiar with issues. Lots of peope on here have hormone and thyroid issues.
Also, MFP assumes that you have an average metabolism, so if you have been diagnosed with an overly fast one your best option is to speak with your doctor or a nutritionist. Also keep in mind, many people choose incorrect settings on MFP What weight loss goal did you choose?
ANd MFP expects you to log your exercise and eat those calories back so even at 1200, you should be eating more than that on days you exercise.
i didn't think hormone/thyroid issues would need to be mentioned, i already said my metabolism is too fast and i have hypoglycemia, i figured that was enough?
i know i need to see a nutritionist, but with no money or decent insurance, that is a ways down the road so i came here for advice in the meantime.
i set my weight loss goal to 1 lb a week on MFP. it never really suggested option to me it just made me pick one lol.
Because we're the "outliers." Having hormonal conditions (did you know weight and appetite and energy usage is ALL from hormones?) throws a wrench in "standard advice." What most people would recommend, or what would work for most, changes once a hormonal disorder's at play. Thyroid in particular is a big siren of "WATCH OUT. THINGS WILL BE CRAZY NOW" in the body. Again, I assume you have hyperthyroidism, or Hashimoto's causing hyperthyroid?0 -
You should have said the meat was for the cat up front.0

You say you're skinny and muscular, and your weight/height combo is in the normal BMI range.
So . . . what's the issue?0 -

maybe "FAST" isn't the word. easier? i guess. i'm not just picking these things out of thin air.

Exercise more. look better naked. have better sex. If it's important enough to mention in a public forum, use it as motivation.0 -

i just did. it says 1610 calories...i just feel like that's a lot if i'm trying to lose weight, especially if i'm also being active?
I eat 1840 calories a day to lose 1 lb a week. I also have hypoglycemia and am 20 years old. You need to be eating way more than 1200 calories. No wonder your hypoglycemia isn't well managed right now Feel free to add me0 -

I have to agree with those who said that throwing in the hormones/thyroid issues and that drastically changes the advice you might be given. Weight gain & weight loss hinges a lot on hormonal responses in your body.0 -

Since you have hypoglycemia, you should avoid processed foods and stick to foods that are high in protein.
Breakfast: eggs, steel cut oats, omelet, bacon, sausage
Morning snack: nuts and a piece of fruit
Lunch: 4 oz. meat, sweet potato or brown rice (complex carbs), veggies
Afternoon snack: greek yogurt with berries (low glycemic)
Dinner: 4 oz. meat, sweet potato or brown rice (complex carbs), veggies
Night snack: protein bar or protein shake (no more than 30 g carbs and watch sugar)0 -

For food: small steps. Every month, try to incorporate a new tool into your arsenal. Start weighing everything, start hitting your protein macro, stop eating that food you find triggers you to take a run on every fast food joint in a 100 mile radius, eat that delicious item in moderation if you find you're being too strict with your diet and want to kill everyone. Try to log as much as you can, and accurately assess how changes in your diet impact your mood and activity levels. You can't fix everything overnight, give yourself time and pay attention to how the things you do affect you.
For exercise: Find something you love to do, and train to become amazing at it. For you, maybe it's the desire to run a marathon, if so train for it. Start running, pick up a resistance training protocol that supports your running. Maybe you want to be a sex god (I'm sorry, I know everyon'e giving you a hard time...but you really left yourself wide open for it), start taking yoga and gymnastics and all that good stuff.
Find something active that you love to do, and do that. I think that in the average person, this is hands down the best way to improve overall health and physique (once diet is in check).0 -
You are not eating enough, I would suggest reverse dieting to slowly get up to more calories. I have made the same mistakes as you and ate too few calories and lost weight for the first little while and then nothing, then I ran across this persons instagram: http://instagram.com/corinanielsen# She is really good shape and eats a ton of calories and lifts heavy weights and has completely transformed her body. She has a blog with info on how to reverse diet, count macros, what exercises she does etc if your interested.0

Why not visit a nutritionist? Hypoglycemia is a very tricky disorder and you may find that investing in professional advice will be a good investment for your health.0
-
See a dietician or physician.
If you are hypoglycemic, you need to eat properly. No matter what you want to weigh or look like in the mirror.
Health comes first and then you can aim for whatever you think is your perfect body.
Also, do some damn exercise and get some sunlight.
THIS! I'm so glad someone finally said this. Don't get medical advice off an internet forum of strangers. This is beyond just losing weight. You have a medical condition you have to take into consideration. See a professional who can look at you and your numbers and determine what's best for you.0 -

i don't work out too much... i am more now that it's warmer. most of my physical activity comes from (sorry tmi!) intimacy with my boyfriend, ha! so decent amount, but not suuuuper active.
i'm trying to stay at 1200 cals a day...but omg it's hard. i keep just starving all the time!
i eat whole grains, fruits and veggies, eggs, protein bars, lean meat... but it's just never enough. my metabolism just gobbles it up and i'm hungry within 2 hours.
any advice? please!? this is so frustrating
1200 is way too low for a hypoglycemic and for your weight and metabolism. My hubs is hypo, he was told by several drs to eat 7 to 8 meals a day and raise his intake by 500. which is a lot! 2200 + 500. But, it helped him. I myself don't have the blood sugar issue but I am 5'4, 115lbs and wear a size 1. But i am 35 and been very lazy. All my weight is on my stomach and butt! I have been on here two weeks and started at 1200, I burned more calories than that just getting out of bed in the mornings (not really but you know what I mean) i had to adjust my calories several times this week. Finally, I used www.iifym.com to calculate all my numbers. I found out yesterday I need 1323 to 1400 a day with light exercise 4 times a week. and adjusted my protein/carbs/fats to a 35/35/30 diet. I feel soooo soooo much better today! Otherwise I was starving myself and causing my body to store fat rather than burn it. But I eat 4 to 5 times a day,Ii suggest with your sugar issue to eat even more than that.(but I'm no dr.) Best of luck dear, I hope you find a method to help you. But I strongly suggest looking at several sites and comparing numbers. p.s I take 20% drop each day, I am aggressive. you may need less a drop with a high metabolism.0 -

when i moved out, i was 115, and really happy with the way i looked. that was end of october.
i did gain 13ish lbs. i just want to go back to when i was more confident and healthy feeling.
When I was your age, my friends started to marry.
Even my ectomorph male friends put on 20 pounds or so
in their bellies.
Some people, in their new lives, excuse the weight gain
by saying, "I'm happy!"
You were slender and happy with yourself
when you left home at end of October, you say?
Soooooooo....think about things:
How is your lifestyle outside the bedroom different now?
How did you eat when you were living at home with your family?
Did you suffer from being famished while living there?
What exercise did you perform?
Were you experiencing the effects of polycystic kidneys back then?
What are you eating and drinking that is different from your family's diet?
The differences are what made you gain 13 pounds in less than 6 months.0
