This may seem like a stupid question, but I have trouble eating all my calories after I exercise.

I get 1393 for my BMR, then usually an additional 300 or more from exercise. I usually eat about 300cal meals (3) and 100-150 cal snacks (2). If I exercise I usually have some left over..sometimes up to 400.

I exercise in the evening usually, between 7-8pm. (I work long hours and commute one hour each way). I am not able to then eat a 600 cal meal just before bed.

So my question is.....two really.....Can I eat the extra calories in my earlier snacks and meals in anticipation of the workout? Then just have something light and protein packed after my workout?...or is it not so bad a few times a week to have extra calories as long as I am covering my BMR?

Any advice will be welcomed!!

  • I personally would include the calories for my excersise thruout the day. This also gives you more motivation to get up and move when you dont want to since you've already put those calories in your mouth!

    Hi

    I would think so
I walk early in the am or late at night after the kids go to work
I bump my calorie target by 100 cals if I walk and I eat that during thew day whenever I want (regardless if I walk in the am/pm)

Since I go to Taekwondo after 6:30pm, there is no way I wait to eat the extra calories when I get home at 8:30pm. I have my preplanned minutes already planned in and adjust it when I get home. I usually need to have a 200-400 caloric snack (cheese plus) then but it is better than trying to eat a whole meal late at night. plus more water.:drinker:
  • Thanks so much for your input. The extra calories to burn off will also be the little push when I want to skip out on my work-out.

Thanks again, this site has been very informative and supportive!!

Definately eat the calories prior~it will help you lose weight, in the long run (it will keep your metabolism in check by consuming all of your allowed calories), it will give your more energy for your workout and it will keep you motivated to actually work out (you know you've eaten the extra calories already!). Try your best to not eat anything about 45 minutes to an hour before working out (your body will use its own fat stores for energy)

yep you can eat them before- I ALWAYS do because I work out at night (between 630 and 9pm) so I need to get them in earlier
