Home Gym

If you could have only one piece of equipment at home for fitness, what would it be?

One thing? The Total Gym. That thing hawked by Chuck Norris. That thing is brilliant. Until you are a heavy duty bodybuilder, that thing is all you need.

    A pullup bar.

It is the one piece of equipment that is absolutely vital for a complete strength program unless you have a barbell and a lot of weight.

A power cage...man I would love one of those but I don't know if I would have the room so I might have to settle for a squat rack instead.

Barbell and plates (I know that's technically more than one thing, but they came as a set so I'm counting as one)

This is what I have, and it's worth it to me. I would recommend spending the money on a gym membership if it's within your budget and a possibility for you.

^^This. I actually have a collapsible one that can also be used as a dip or inverted-row station. With this piece of equipment, a little know-how, and some improvisational ingenuity, it's possible to get a solid bodyweight regimen going.

The cheap New York Barbell power cage I bought >10 years ago: http://www.newyorkbarbells.com/92563.html and a cheap oly bar w/ 300# of weights.

(Oh, wait...is that more than one thing? Whatever...I bought it in one order so I'm pretending that it qualifies.)

Strap system like TRX or Jungle Gym XT. Great workouts can be had with them, and they are portable, so you always have your gym with you.

Best thing I bought for mine was the power rack. But as it is mostly useless without other items, I would say, if I could only have one thing, it would be a loaded barbell

I saw a video the other day of Coco Austin using this surfboard-like balance exercising machine called a "functional eccentric trainer" and it's my new life goal to buy one, forreal:

If just one item, I second the TRX suspension trainer...

I'm so limited for space I had to settle for squat stands, I can only use a 6ft bar, AND I have to flip my bed up against the wall to workout. It's not optimal, but it works.

If I could add one more piece of "equipment", it would be space.

Screw that. Right now I only have a few weights and a heavy bag. Next step is the lifting platform, bumper plates and an oly bar. I still like going to my gym for squats, etc. but I want to deadlift outside in the sunshine next to the pool.
