About three weeks ago I sustained a knee injury while doing a sports event. Ligaments in both knees hurt (not torn), my knees swollen and advice from GP not to do Zumba until things get better (I should probably mention I have arthritis). Thing is the gym and Zumba are my way of distressing and keeping in control of my diet. I am starting to slowly climb up the walls here and my poor husband is trying to help me remain positive. Needless to say not working great at the moment. I have reached the point where I do not go to the gym so I do not see other people doing the exercise because I feel like a failure by hurting myself while doing exercise that other people found ok. I know that it is me and some people may say so what? you will be back to the gym in 1 month. But it took me so long to get fit and healthy and the thought that this might go wrong petrifies me. I should also probably say that since I stopped going to the gym have put on 1.5 pound. Any advice on how to deal with this? I am getting demoralised fast here.

Swim, cycle, continue upper body strength training.

What about other types of exercise? I have regular knee problems arising from a motorcycle accident 11 years ago- my right knee was wrecked and I have no kneecap. It gives out randomly and without warning- consequently, over the past decade my left knee has compensated and become the dominant one, but is prone to tweaks and whatnot. I find that non-impact motions (like the stationary bike) can be really helpful. Also, core and upper body workouts can be done without damaging the knee joints.

Hope you find something that helps in the interm!

As has been said, low impact exercises.

Inflammation is often an issue with this type of injury. Eating a plant based diet, heavy in fruits and vegetables will help with that.

Google "chair zumba". I know that there are several videos on youtube.

    Or try "Zumba Gold".

Yes...they are designed for the elderly, morbidly obese...but will also work for those that are suffering from an injury or disability.

There are also chair aerobics that I have done when my hip or knees are bothering me.

    ^----THIS

I had ankle surgery a little over a month ago. Still in a boot and with crutches. Not fully walking, and no running for a few months :( Injuries suck. I can totally relate to the frustration, and quite honestly I've been a bit b*itchy over the past month. I've been doing upper body lifting 2-3 times per week. It's not what I would like, but it's something to get me through. Got on the stationary bike this morning, only 10 minutes but it's a start. As soon as the doctor gives me a go, I will be in the pool! You might not be able to do the exercise you want, but you should be able to find something else. Ask your doctor or physical therapist or one of the trainers at the gym to recommend some alternatives.
