Dedicated vs Obsessed ?

Some people are saying I'm obsessed with "this fitness thing" and others are saying I'm dedicated. When I'm at the coffee shop (local non chain mom and pop type) I'll ask for the product tin so I can scan it (IE David Rio's chai Latte powder). Even my fitness instructor tells me "remember to log everything". I'm known in town as "the girl with her headphones in and walking / running everywhere" and at first it was a little weird, but now I'm getting stopped and congratulated, or people stop and ask me what song I'm listening to, or what apps I'm using etc. Funny thing is, some people pull out their iPhone and look it up the apps / albums, or some people seem uninterested. I'm lucky to find people aside my fitness instructor and studio friends that I can talk fitness with and talk for what seems like forever and not get bored. 2 of them were actually in the military, and another is currently on weight watchers, and married with 2 kids to a local minor league boxer.

THIS! I could not have said it better.
  • I'd call you obsessed if your entire life revolve around food and fitness. I work with someone who is both horribly unfit, and obsessed with the idea of losing weight to the point where eating healthy, which in her mind somehow involves not eating sugar or wheat but not counting calories, is all she talks about. And she absolutely does not believe that I've lost 30lbs counting calories and eating ice cream every day.

I'd say asking for the actual tin is taking it a little too far, why not just ask what they use then log it, do you eat out at all?

Some people have to break through the denial to fix their problems...takes longer for some than others.

Dedicated is when you keep doing it even when life throws a curve ball.

Obsessed is when you stop enjoying life because it is all you concentrate on.

Totally this, there's a fine line and anyone who doesn't understand what you're doing or why you're doing it will choose obsessed.

I get a bit of this too. One of my friends recently found out I was counting calories and freaked out on me, saying it was obsessive and was going to lead to bad places blah blah. Sorry girl but you're sitting in front of me eating a brownie and a plate of fries, and you literally just bought a tube of Pringles and a bag of chocolates for later, but no, I'm being unhealthy? You do your thing and I'll do my thing!

I do try to not log things etc when people are around because I do get weird looks.

But what if I enjoy life more than ever because of the thing I'm obsessed about ?!?

People will always judge, no matter what... As long as you do it for you, you'll be fine :)
  • I know someone who is so dedicated to the fitness lifestyle that it cost them their marriage, purely because they'd rather spend time working out at the gym or eating specially prepared meals for one with everything measured out exactly to fit into their daily requirements, than relax their self imposed fitness rules for one day so they could spend a little quality time with the children and even *shockhorror* eat something they did not know the exact nutritional content of. That's when I tend to think they've crossed over from being dedicated to obsessed. It's admirable to live a healthy lifestyle, but not when you have absolutely no flexibility and have a screaming fit because your child wants you to try a cookie.

There are people who'll call the dedicated obsessed, but there are the obsessed who'll tell anyone showing genuine concern for their welfare that they just don't understand. It's a very fine line to walk, and far too easy to find yourself surrounded by like minded people who also think soandso is obsessed/whatserface just doesn't understand true dedication. With that said if you're happy who cares if someone thinks you're obsessed?

I think I'm still in the honeymoon phase of it so I feel like I am totally obsessed. Seriously, all I want to do is workout and I have been having SO MUCH FUN doing things like Zumba YouTube videos, pushing myself on cardio machines, and going to the gym. Some nights I can't hardly fall asleep because I want to wake up already and weigh myself, haha. If you're happy, then you're doing just fine :)

I would call dedicated when you stick to it as much as life allows and dont beat yourself up when you have the occasional blip. Life is here to be enjoyed. Having an occasional splurge happens. The key is to accept it, not freak out and simply move on.

Obsessed is letting the calorie counting get in the way of life.

I would agree with this. Dedicated [to me] means allowing yourself to go out for dinner with your SO or friends once in awhile. Obsessed would be missing your best friends birthday dinner or something because you're afraid of not being able to count the calories or afraid to let yourself have a cheat day.

I think there's a fine line & it's really important to still enjoy other parts of your LIFE while working on your personal health.

Actually, it depends... I have to admit that I am obsessed, but not with resistance or weight training.

My obsession is with Zumba and other types of dance work outs. I know it is strange for a 48 year old man to say that. I don't care... I love to come up with my own Zumba routines. I love Zumba so much that I had taken the Zumba Basic 1 Instructor Training Class and I am currently a member of the Zumba Instructor Network.

I am also obsessed with not eating any red meat, fast food, or batter fried food. I get sick at just the smell of red meat, fast food, or batter fried food.

I am mostly vegetarian but I do have some bone less skinless chicken, ground turkey, fish, and seafood.

For the most part, I have been able to keep my weight at between 175-180 lbs.

Obsession is being so fixed on something (your calorie count per day, for example), that it puts you into a negative mental health state.

Dedication is when you can still live your life and go out to eat, but make smart choices. And not cry if you go over your calorie goal.

I'm obsessed and I don't care. It's like drugs man, I love that adrenaline rush and then the endorphin rush afterwards. It's awesome man! I have to get my daily fix of it or I'm cranky and moody.

To be honest, I think changing your lifestyle and becoming fit takes a certain degree of obsession. Eventually that might fade a bit and turn to dedication/habit instead.

Totally...your life kinda revolves around it...at least mentally...for awhile in order for you to get through all the challenges that come with a huge change. Slowly it becomes easier and a habit and you have to keep consistent dedication, but can start to focus on other things in your life at the same time.
