Is there any merit to this?

So when I go to the gym I see these two guys on the bench press. They put on two big weights, then about 5 or 6 small weights. One of them benches maybe 4 times, then the other guy takes off 2 weights, bencher benches like 3 or 4 times, other guy takes off 2 more weights, etc.
I've seen guys do this other than those two. Just wondering if there was any merit to lifting that way.

It's a technique called 'drop sets'. The idea is you can keep working a muscle after it has reached failure at a higher weight.
You can't do them all the time or you will mess your s**t up! (I don't like them at all and never use them but a bodybuilder might give you ten reasons why they're AWESOME)0 -
They are doing drop sets. Its a great mass building technique.
You only want to do workouts like that when in a calorie surplus and have supercharged recovery. That sort of work will make the muscles grow like nothing else.0 -
^^Yes what they said.^^0

Yeah, I'm doing this with my lifting now. It's definitely intense and effective. And the fact is, even though I'm eating just slightly below maintenance, my recomping is going faster then I would have expected.0
