I recently joined my local gym and I plan on going at least three times a week, hopefully four. My plan is to alternate between working my upper and lower body, but I'm not really sure what the best exercises are. I have access to the machines and free weights. Also, should I incorporate cardio and core training into it?

Wendlers 5/3/1 is a good split IMO. It's just the four main lifts (deadlifts, bench, squats and OHP) plus whatever assistance exercises you feel you need.
ETA: if you're just starting out though, maybe a full body programme like starting strength or Stronglifts would be better.0
