Is there a true way to track sodium?

I have been trying hard to watch my sodium intake by using less prepackaged meals, buying low sodium canned goods, eating fresher veggies, etc. When I make meals that use canned goods, I always drain and rinse the veggies/ beans, etc but when I plug the ingredients in MFP, the recipe takes into account the total sodium, not what is left after the drain&rinse. The same applies for when I make chicken in the crockpot. It may cook in beer or veggie broth but I don't eat or use the all of the liquid.
Sodium is the one aspect of my day that I can't seem to manage. Ideally, I know I should stay around 1500mg of sodium a day, but I'm usually ending up about twice that. So I'm wondering what is the best way to track this?

Your probably doing it. I'm a self confessed whole food eater and a very high percentage of the salt I consume is the salt I add. And it's not low, but then again I'm not one of those people that believe removing salt at all costs is required,0
