How to start) strength training/toning?

For years I've done a lot of walking and jogging (as well as Shaun T's hip hop abs). Recently I've been noticing (mainly from mfp) what a big difference strength training can make and I'd like to give it a try (I'm not looking to lose a ton of weight but rather firm up). Any suggestions for a beginner? Also I have a 6 month old daughter so running to the gym every day isn't an option for me. Anything I could do while pushing her in the stroller? Free online workouts? I have a few very light hand weights (2 lbs, 3 lbs, and 5 lbs). Would love suggestions!

Honestly you will need heavier weights than that as you progress as those won't do much for you. Buy used and save yourself money. Get a bench as well if you can.

Heavy compound lifts are the way to go.

Bodyweight exercises are also a good option.

    Good luck!

You can start with on line body weight strength training programs (convict conditioning, NerdFitness.com, you are your own gym). They are a great way to build strength.

If you really want results, you will need weight programs with compound lifts. Good starting programs are Stronglifts, Starting Strength, New Rules of Lifting for Women. For these you will need either a gym that has access to free weights or weights at home. Basic needs: barbell, weight plates, bench, squat rack (in that order).

It it's body recomp you are after - then 2,3,5 pound dumbbells are not going to give you the results you are wanting.
