Possibly silly question about pull-up machine grips

Hello,

Not terribly well-acquainted with lifting so forgive me if this is a silly question. The pull-up machine is something I use for assisted pull-ups (which together with pulldowns I hope to build up to unassisted one day). Just wondering about its multitude of functions.

So there's a neutral grip. Then there are two sets of handles (no bar), one above the other by maybe 10cm, appear to be the about the same width apart. I can only assume they are for 'protonated' pull-ups, which I do on the top handles out of pure habit, but why the difference in height? I currently do 3x8 neutral and 3x8 of the upper protonated grips but I'm wondering if I'm using the machine to its full efficacy.

Thanks! :)

I think it's a safety feature to discourage people from trying to switch grips without first dismounting. That could cause a scene.
It doesn't change the effects, provided you use full range of motion.
