This is an easy bean burger that makes a large batch (10 burgers) that actually hold together really well, can be frozen and reheated easily. It does contain wheat, soy and also eggs, so it's not vegan (edited - thanks, Jenni!)

5 cups cooked beans (I use pintos, you can use whatever you'd like!)
1/2 cup of dry Cream of Wheat
1/2 cup TVP
2 large eggs - can substitute 3 egg whites
1 envelope onion soup mix, dry

Mash the beans - you can leave some whole for texture if you'd like.
Dump in everything else
Mix well - honestly, I use my hands. It works.

Let it hang out in the fridge for about 30 mins.
Shape into 10 patties, place on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
Let cool, eat or freeze!

Huh. I make bean burgers a lot, but never thought of using Cream of Wheat!! How smart for the extra iron content. Thank you! I'm going to make these and skip the onion soup pack and just season myself.

I had the same question. Just googled, and it seems to be Textured Vegetable Protein

TVP is soy protein, in crumbles. I use Bob's Red Mill brand - a 10oz bag is 3-4 bucks. One bag lasts foreeeeeeever if I just use it for these. I get about 7 batches (70 burgers) out of one bag of TVP.

    :)

I just crunched numbers on how much this recipe costs, for anyone interested -

60 cents -TVP per recipe (at 4 bucks a 10oz bag)
34 cents – eggs per recipe (at 2 bucks a dozen)
16 cents – Cream of Wheat per recipe (at 4 bucks a 36oz box)
$1.50 – onion soup mix per recipe (1 packet)
$1.00 – 1 lb dry pinto beans (I usually get 6 cooked cups, so will have a little extra)

Total: $3.60 per recipe, or 36 cents per burger.

And, as another poster pointed out, you can skip the onion soup and season yourself (which I will start doing!) and cut down on both the calories (the soup mix contributes 160 calories total) and bring the recipe cost to $2.10, per-serving cost down to 21 cents a burger.

Here are the nutrition stats without onion soup mix:
