What should I eat for fibre?

Hi there,

Recently I've been a little bit blocked up. It's really getting to me because I'm eating quite a lot, drinking so much water and exercising but I'm just not going!!

I eat anywhere between 1,500-2,000 calories a day, I eat a LOT of carbs, e.g rye crackers/bagels or toast for breakfast, with peanut butter. Lunch is a sandwich or homemade leftovers, maybe curry, or chilli. Then for dinner I'll eat meat, veg and some sort of carb.

I can't for the life of me understand why I'm constipated. I eat chia seeds every day, I eat dates, I drink SO much green tea surely this isn't normal?

Could it be something as simple as rushing in the morning and not having time/stress?

Please help this is really getting me down, and making me feel slow and sluggish. :(

Thanks!

Have a cup of coffee and a cigarette and see what happens :smokin:

I'm KIDDING! Are you hitting your fiber goals every day? It is a macro nutrient a lot of people don't worry about, unlike protein or carbs, but an important one. Look in your diary...what has been your daily fiber intake over the past few days? If you don't already track fiber, go to your diary and "settings" and add fiber to what you track in your diary.

Quick calc off of two nutritional labels looks like 25 to 30 grams per day. Let me introduce you to my friend, the prune. If you can stand them, they are a decent source of fiber and have sorbitol (according to my nutritionist) that can also help move things along. I like them so it is no big deal (great snack for me - like candy). She also recommended adding flax seed to my oatmeal (haven't tried it yet). Upping the water intake will also help.

And, skip the cigarette but have the coffee  (that cracked me up)

Oh I hate prunes! Does anyone have any good ways to disguise them? I'm the Least fussy eater but prunes are the one thing I can't stomach! Will prune juice do the trick (i can pinch my nose and gulp it!) or does the juicing process take out some of the fibre?

How's your fat intake? Fat acts as a lubricant and gets things moving. Too low on the fat = no movement.

Skip them then. I found this chart you might find helpful:

Dried fruit, fresh fruit, veggies, etc - especially if you eat the skin.

If you just recently increased your fiber intake you can actually get the opposite result while your body adjusts. make sure you are getting plenty of fluids and fats.
I have digestive issues and sometimes struggle to get enough fiber in my diet. My GI doctor recommended I try Metamucil and that does in fact work the best for me. Plain old orange favored dissolve in water metamucil. I take it right before I go to sleep for the night.

I will repost what I wrote above:

Track fiber in MFP like you would protein or fat. You will see exactly what is recommended for you.
