Working out

Hey everyone. I am curious. Everytime after I workout, which is about an hour and a half at the gym, I get an upset stomach. I always drink a protein shake after working out and I was mixing it with almond milk. I thought maybe it had to do with that so I started mixing the protein with water. But I am still getting the upset stomachs. They will last for about a couple of hours afterwards. Is this normal?

might be the protein.
There are certain ones that make me nauseated- like I feel like I'm going to puke for hours. It's awful.
Also could be dehydration or lack of electrolytes.
If you can't narrow down a culprit it's never a bad decision to go to the doc.0 -
I would think it may have to do with the protein shake as well. Try going without it for a couple of days and see how you feel. There are plenty of other ways to get protein without using shakes or bars.0

What kind of protein are you using? If you are using Whey protein and you are sensitive to dairy (you mentioned you were using almond milk so, I'm only guessing) that is probably why. I use a Vegan protein powder, because the protein comes from rice, peas etc.0

Its problably the lactose in the protien shake, use lactase tables or go for a non dairy protien powder like brown rice protienor the even do beef protien powder now.
there is also isolate protien but the still give me stomache upset I will be buying beef protien powder next from bulk powders.com0 -
you might be eating too much too soon after a strenuous workout. Maybe wait an hour after working out before drinking the protein shake? And how much water do you drink during the workout? Either too much water (its rare but can happen) or too little water could make you feel unwell afterwards.0

people can become sensitive to lactose as adults after having no problem with it as kids. Lactose intolerance can come and go - I was in college when mine began, and I only noticed it when I had dairy on an empty stomach. If I had dairy with a meal, I didn't have a problem. So yeah, it could be lactose in your protein powder. My lactose intolerance went away again after about a decade. If you think this might be your problem, you'll need a vegan protein powder.0

There are a number of possibilities here ranging from allergies, quality issues with protein manufacture, your sensitivity to exercise induced nausea, your degree of hydration, etc. I'd recommend the following:
Try not having the protein shake a few times and see if you feel nauseous.
If the nausea persists, then try to check your hydration levels. If you're drinking a LOT of water, cut back or replace with a drink that contains electrolytes (Gatorate, for example). If you're not drinking a lot of water, try upping your intake slightly.
If the nausea persists, then look at the intensity of your work out. It might be that you aren't properly cooling down (i.e. ending your exercise abruptly) or are going at it with more intensity than your body can handle (I'd recommend getting a Heart Rate Monitor to make sure that you're within an acceptable range).
Hope this helps.0 -
I'm using ISO-1000 whey protein. I will try the non protein way for a few days. I drink one water bottle while working out. I'm going to start trying the coconut water thing also to see if that helps.0
