Advice after a bad food day

Hello Everyone,


I just could use some words of encouragement after a day of not so good eating. I was still under my limit, but it was way more than I"ve been eating and it was the best stuff. I feel disappointed in myself, but I know tomorrow is a new day. I'm doing Insanity so maybe that can make up a tiny tiny bit for it... but not much.

Words of encouragement please? I would be extremely thankful!

    Sometimes, we all need to have some of the not-so-awesome food choices. It can be good for our minds to get that type of reward. The key is to work it into your daily limits, calories first then macros. From your post, it sounds like even since you had a cheat (I prefer treat) meal, you didn't go over your calories for the day. That is the way to do it and there should really be no harm done. If it had a bunch of salt in it, you may see your weight go up a bit, but that is just some water retention, and that will go back down in a day or 2.

    How are you liking Insanity? That program is tough stuff.

    In general, don't be so hard on yourself. We are all human, and we cannot eat chicken and broccoli every day. This is a change in lifestyle. It's a marathon not a sprint. As long as you are eating healthy the majority of the time (80/20 rule for instance), you're in good shape and should be proud.

    1) As long as your total calories are within your goals (calories/macros) it doesn't matter what you eat. You will still lose weight.

    2) You're not supposed to come in under your calorie goal on a regular basis. That daily goal already includes a deficit. Going under too much means you're got too high of a deficit and you will not be able to progress well with your training. You also need to make sure you're eating back at least half of earned exercise calories.

    As the other poster mentioned, you may see an uptick on the scale but it's likely due to water weight as "junk" food tends to have higher sodium. Drink more water, get some high potassium foods in and you'll be fine.

    You're human - it happens. If you don't splurge a little every now and then, you will end up splurging a lot. You need to give yourself a break and remember, it's only one day. What you do in one day will not have a huge effect. Look at the big picture, that's where you'll see your changes. Don't be so hard on yourself. :)

    We all have days like this.

    For over half a year I seriously struggled with eating clean and even just healthy in general. I still have a treat once or even twice a week.

    When I've had a seriously bad day, I drink lots of water.

    We're only human at the end of the day. We are not machines. Insanity is a tough but satisfying work - out with really good results. Fuel your fight!

    If you were still under your limit whats the problem? Keep in mind your calorie goal is just that! You need to hit it; the name of the game is not eat as little as you possibly can.

    Eating "bad" food but still being under your limits. What's the problem here? That's not a bad food day at all. If you want to see a bad food day, come visit me on any weekend day. Limits? What limits? What goals? Calorie? What the hell is that? Hey, are you going to finish that cookie?

    Don't let falling off the healthy eating wagon once derail your journey. Dust yourself off and get back on. You're human, be kind to yourself.

    Having said that, if you came in under your calorie goal for the day, why do you feel guilty? NO ONE can sustain a diet devoid of the 'yummy' stuff when it's all right there waiting to be gobbled up. You did just fine. :)
  • Thanks everyone so much for the encouraging words! I usually am pretty hard on myself, and I don't like when I fall off a wagon. Even if I fall off for a day and get back on, I don't like it. I feel like maybe I should tone that down and not be so obsessive of all of it. Thanks again everyone! Today is a new day, and I have been making the right decisions so far!

    Allan,

    I'm actually loving Insanity! I was going to start it during the summer, but my friend wanted us to do it together. So him and I have been on this challenge together which I think it has been good for me. It makes me push through each work out and to better myself. But I have noticed since starting it, that I'm in better moods, and feel great and not mentally tired.

    I day isn't going to hurt you. I tend to focus more on the week rather than the day. One day this week I went over my alloted calories by about 300, but yesterday I had a deficit of over 1000. Moderation is key. Good luck! :)

    I would highly suggest you pick up the book "The Beck Diet Solution." She addresses a lot of the "psychological" problems people have while losing weight - like beating yourself up after a "bad" day, and how that can lead to self-sabotage!

    The words used to describe this day of eating actually make it sound like it was your best day eating in a while. Your original post makes it seem that you routinely undereat by a substantial amount and then get upset when you even approach your caloric intake goal (note the difference between a limit and goal).

    If you're under your calorie limit you REALLY have nothing to beat yourself up about.

    Drink some water. Eat the rest of your calories. Go for a walk if you really want to.

    Realise that this really really isn't a big deal.

    Stop thinking of food as good or bad. Drink a glass of water and work on building a better thought process when it comes to food.
  • The issue here (in my mind at least) is that the OP has the idea that any sort of food in particular makes a "bad day". Why is a couple of cookies now and again bad? They're not. Ice cream is evil?? Nope, not in the slightest. How about birthday cake?! Oh no not cake!! Well, I love cake.

    I've lost a couple of pounds (just a couple), and I did that while eating "bad" foods. As long as you're active, working on not eating the way you used to -every- day and enjoy developing a new -lifestyle-, then no food makes a "bad" day. Are you really never going to have pizza night again? Hot wings and beer on a football game night? Never??

    My advice is to change the way you think. Is this a diet for you? Or is this change going to be forever? Just my two cents.

    Did no one notice what she said...

    She was under her limit yet she ate way more than what she normally does. Maybe the problem wasn't yesterday but instead that she has been way under her limit.

    OP...what is your limit and how much have you been eating?

    What's wrong with eating junk occasionally? I eat junk. As long as I stay under my calorie goal I'm all good! I'm losing!
  • If you are saying you ate some junk food or unhealthy stuff, just call it a cheat day and eat better the next few days. BTW, I lost 61 pounds, and am maintaining quite well doing a cheat day every Friday.

    Drink a lot of water.

    Saturdays are my cheat day. I still lose weight. One bad day isn't going to ruin a long stretch of good days.

    You've just described my last two days. So, here's what we are both going to do: Get over it and move forward. The world isn't going to end because I ate at Olive Garden (for my son's birthday dinner, no less!) last night and had a business lunch at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants today at lunch. The world isn't going to end because you ate "junk"!

    BTW, Olive Garden R&D are geniuses. They have tiny desserts, (called dolcinis) 4 or 5 bites. It's just enough that I was able to have a "taste" of dessert without an entire piece of tiramisu or black tie cake, or whatever. Thank you Olive Garden! I looooooovvve you!
