Hello all,
I'm 51 and I'm out of shape. I had a routine visit to my doctor and got the full old-age diagnosis: high BP, cholesterol, diabetes, etc. I was referred to a nutritional counselor who told me about myfitnesspal, which I just started using this week. It helps me log my food and exercise but it has been such a drastic change from my sedentary life that it's hard to adjust. I have hated exercising and working out my entire life-and still do, but I simply have to do it. I was a chubby kid but strong as an ox, grew up on a farm and worked hard. Then I went to college for a year and just ate and drank too much. I joined the AF and lost 25 lbs in 6 weeks of basic training :-D I still think that's pretty funny. After 10 years in, I was pushing the max weight standards for the rest of my 23 years. I never worked out much except the little mandatory things I had to do. I retired 10 years ago and they weren't too serious about conditioning then but they seem to be much stricter on it now. Right before retirement, we'd have to run for miles, 3 days a week. My knees were so bad, I'd be at the end of the pack, in pain. Thank God the captain I worked for was a triathlete and would finish quickly and then jump in his truck to come pick me up; so sad. With my newly diagnosed list of bad things, I've picked up a daily pill container to hold all my new meds and I'm having to eat smarter and eat less. I feel frustrated, angry and sad. I wonder why I let myself get this way and how many others do the same thing. Often, I'm sad that I let down myself and others who count on me. This is very difficult but I'll hang in there. On a good note, I've been staying under my daily limits and I've lost 4 lbs this week but I know that pace will slow. Anyone else feel this bad or is it just me?

Welcome to MFP and to middle age! Ha!
I went for my physical late last year and my BP was too high so the good doc put me on BP meds. It really p'd me off
Well, I did the same as you. I joined MFP! Then I joined a gym which I go to at least 5 times a week, I got a FitBit in February and this month, got off those pills because the doc took me off of them. Amazing what a little cardio can accomplish!
I'd say, if you are thinking about joining a gym, go visit a bunch of them and find one that you feel is right for you and where you feel at home. They definitely aren't all the same. I absolutely used to hate going to a gym until I found the right one. Now, I actually look forward to my morning routine! I really, truly do.
Good luck to you!
