Biggest nutrition/weight loss/fitness pet peeves?

I, for one, hate the word "skinny." I hate when girls on here say, "I just want to be skinny!" Why? There's nothing sexy about being skinny. There's nothing hot about a thigh gap. Fit is the new skinny! Being healthy is more important than looking like Jessica Alba.

I also hate when women say they don't want to do strength training because they don't want to be "muscular." What a huge misconception! Women don't have the testosterone needed to bulk up like men. On a similar note, I hate that age-old logic that you do heavy weights, low reps to bulk up and light weight, high reps to "tone." Not true. Men who lift heavy bulk up; women who lift heavy "tone up." Some women seem to think lifting for 30 minutes three times a week will make them into some bodybuilder. If only it were that easy, right guys?

The myth of the 1200 calorie diet. Don't even get me started! If I see one more new thread about, "What do you eat on 1200 calories per day?" Not enough, that's what! Unless you're a tiny petite woman, you should be eating more than 1200 calories per day.

I also can't stand when people try to tell others on here that there's only one way to do things. The pretentious "my way or the highway" attitude. I say do what works for you, as long as you're doing it in a healthy way and not harming your body in the process! Examples of harming your body: Not eating enough, trying to attain a figure that does not exist, putting your vanity over your health.

What are your biggest pet peeves regarding nutrition, weight loss, and/or fitness? Any huge misconceptions that you're sick of? Feel free to rant about it here!

    We needed this thread :)

I agree with you on the women and weights thing. It makes me facepalm when women say "They don't want to gain all kinds of muscle and look manly" as if gaining even a pound of muscle is easy.

One of my biggest ones though: When you politely decline a doughnut, pastry, etc. and people get offended. They assume you think you're better than them for not eating it and that you have a holier than thou complex when in all actuality, you think nothing even close to that. This really grinds my gears!!!

My biggest pet peeve is probably just all of the fads and miracle products. I am sure that SOME of them do have merit, but I have always zoned out on them because they just really annoy me. I won't name specific ones and risk starting a huge fight in your thread but generally if it's a pill or a shake and promises huge results, it can be considered my pet peeve ;-)

Personally, what bugs me is some of my acquaintances who ask me how I've lost over 100 lb and when I tell them they instantly make excuses and/or argue with me about counting calories "not working" or "won't work for them". Meanwhile they are working out constantly and eating huge meals from Five Guys and Outback and drinking mochas from Starbucks and weighing the same they have always weighed with no discernible fitness improvements from all of their workouts. I feel like they're just wasting their time honestly even though exercise is great, these are generally people who have 50-100+ lb to lose and are continually frustrated but won't try anything except various pricey fitness machines for their homes and/or workout programs on DVD.

the pushing of pills, gimicks, wraps, etc to help weight loss. I've tried the pills and I coundn't take them because half of a pill made me shake. I only took them when I was sick and needed the extra energy to get through high school and work.

I have a friend that is pushing her skinny wraps on facebook and it pisses me off. Nothing but counting caloires and eating right works. Getting off of your butt and working out makes a big difference too.

Other women that say lifting weights will make them bulky... If you're on steroids, sure, but if you're not then just shut it and pick up a dumbbell. lol.

Pretty much everything the OP stated. The idea of comparing yourself to edited/airbrushed images in media as a way to define healthy or what you should look like.

Also, people who don't rack the @#$% weights or put them back haphazardly.

YES! My mother-in-law wanted me to go with her to get one of those wraps done. "My friend lost 10 lbs in an hour!" Yeah, until she drank some water. Needless to say, I didn't go. I told her I'd rather do it the old fashioned way.

I totally agree. I'm so glad to help people if they want advice. I have a friend that recently told me she's serious about losing weight and asked for my help. I sent her an obnoxiously long email with anything I thought would help her. I'm no nutritionist, and I told her that, but I'll do what I can to help her out. She thanked me profusely for the email and has asked for some recipes. That's great. However, I have other friends that constantly ask me "What are you doing to lose weight?" and, when I tell them, they either make excuses or act as if I'm lying or that it would be some huge hassle just to find a TDEE calculator and punch in some numbers. If you're not willing to work hard, why ask me at all? It's as if they're expecting me to have some super easy and quick way to lose weight. No such thing exists! I eat better and exercise - that's it! If you're not willing to do that, don't ask me for advice.

I used to make a lot of excuses as to why I couldn't lose weight, and I'm also guilty of relying on 1200 calorie diets, so I'm not saying I'm better than these people. It's just frustrating to see it over and over again and they just never listen!

Ahahaha, that drive me nuts, too! Especially the dumbbells where each slot has the number of the weight you're supposed to put there... There's always a 20 or 25 in the 15 slot!

Fat acceptance. (Don't google it and look at images, I'm warning you.) These people are putting people down for caring about their bodies. It's one thing when you don't care about your weight and look, that's totally fine and acceptable. I don't judge anyone. But where the problem lies is when you start shaming people that are actually trying to be healthy and lose weight.

Some people are naturally "skinny." And they can be sexy too. One of my peeves is putting down certain body types. :)

MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE is people who try to say they are burning 1500 calories on the elliptical for 40 minutes of work, then eat back that false burn and then wonder why they did not lose any weight..DUH!!! Unless you weigh 900 lbs it is very unlikely you are putting up a burn like that...I mean, my blood pressure literally rises...

This came up on anothe thread today, and I had to back away slowly before I exploded...
Gaining muscle is NOT difficult for women if you are doing it right.
Apparently I'm doing it wrong, with the actual lifting and the eating, because it's been difficult like a b*tch. Maybe those little pink neoprene 5-pounders really are the secret!

YESSS!!!! I'm going to say that for the most part, people probably burn less than half of what they claim to burn.

People who tell me that 1200 calories isn't enough - I've done the calculator - I'm short, I'm not that active and I'm not 21 anymore- the number I get is 1228 for 'fat loss' sedentary. If I don't do any exercise that is what I am supposed to eat. Yes I eat back when I exercise, but don't assume everyone is the same. You know what assume means......

Thank you!! I hate reading the posts "Sooo full on 1000 calories can't manage to choke down the last 200." Really? Then how did you gain weight in the first place?

It's an annoying humblebrag. I eat all my daily calories and 1/2 or so of my exercise calories and am satiated but hardly stuffed - I'm a comfortable level of full, and get hungry before meals like clockwork. It used to scare me that I was some sort of monster who was never full on 1200 a day - I had to switch to eat more calories and filling foods - lots of veggies, protein, whole grains, etc, with only occasional treats and eating out.

When people completely cut out entire food groups, convinced that this will miraculously make them lose weight. No, this will make you sick, tired and you will probably either become obsessed or just give up!

I have a few pet peeves that I cannot decide which I dislike the most:

First, probably worst, is the people who constantly talk about how they want to lose weight and diet for a day or 2 but never actually make the commitment, but continue to talk about how much the need to lose weight. **** or get of the pot.

Second, Plexus (and other magical weight loss potions). Go from stage 3 obese to just regular stage 1 obese. I don't really need to say anything else, you all know.

Lastly, and this one will make some of you mad, deal with it. People who discourage VLCD without properly evaluating the situation. VLCD do have a place, they are not for most people, but they are for some. People who are Obese don't have an immediate concern for becoming skinny-fat, nor are they going to reduce their metabolism to work at a slower rate than what would equal the amount of weight they would lose on the standard weight loss calorie suggestions. They do, however, have an immediate concern of dying from a heart attack. They should lose a lot of weight, quickly, and then work into something healthier as they get down out of the "obese" category and into the "over weight" category. If you don't have a VERY solid understanding of the pros as well as the cons of VLCD, you don't have the right to tell anyone not to do it. A lot of people think they understand, and they do not.

I agree with all of your post except that part. Looks are preference. What's sexy to you, may not be sexy to the next. Jessica Alba is 100% sexy :) And thigh gap is hot. Keep Calm and Chive on!
