I think some might consider the polite thing to do would be to make light of the effort/work put into things and not just for weight loss or fitness. I'm not saying that's a good thing by the way - I'm English, being outwardly self-deprecating and deferrent whilst stealthily having EVERYTHING is in the national character...
I saw someone I hadn't seen for ages at Christmas and she commented on my weight loss and I admitted I'd (literally) busted my *kitten* and we both laughed, we were both a bit tipsy and she asked if it was hard and I flat out said yes. If we were at work, I would have been expected to shrug and make out it's no big deal. At that point I'd lost almost a third of my body mass, but y'know, it was nowt.0
