Cast iron plates too small for my barbell :(

So i bought my bench and barbell with 50kg weights domyos brand. I didn't get any dumbells or smaller weights so I bought a set off a friend. Got 90kg of plates and the dumbell bars for £20. I was madeup with getting it so cheap. Problem is the new plates are a couple of millimeters smaller looks like I will have to buy a new barbell. Its a shame because I really like my first set. The barbell is 10kg and doesn't feel like it will break like some of the cheaper ones (I'm sure they wont actually break) and all the domyos weights look brand new. Plus I have looked for a new barbell second hand and can't see any.
Seems strange that they don't fit as I thought they was all standard size 1" and 2" for Olympic sets

So I have done some research and my current set is 28 mm holes. Standard sets are 25 mm (the 90kg York weights i got)
Anyone else had this problem with a set? How would I get around it? New bar and sell my 50kg set? Could the smaller plates be filed down some way? Seems like a waste just sitting there when I could be using it.
Also is their any benefits in having the 28mm bar over a 25?0 -
There's no real advantage to the thin bars of either size you have; most people and gyms use the Olympic standard size which has 5cm diameter ends, 28mm centre shaft, and weigh 20kg.
If you file them down, they won't weigh what they're supposed to anyway :P
Pick a size and stick with it is the best option. I would opt to sticking with the 28mm; I'm thinking the centre shaft has the same diameter? If that's the case, it's the same thickness as an Oly bar so if you transition later on it won't feel so peculiar.0 -
I don't mind them not weighing the same as they do now as its only a few mm. It just seems a Shame having all the weight and not being able to use it on my barbell. It's still ok for my dumbells but I have no light plates for my barbell. The lowest i have are 5kgs.
Looks like the 3 options are 1. Sell new weights and look for some with bigger holes, 2. Sell my current set and buy a new bar, 3. Make the holes bigger if possible.
And yes the bars the same 28 mm all the way along0
