Hey all,
When should you start using a weightlifting belt? I'm considering it for squats and deads. Also which is better leather or neoprene?

Here's a good article that covers a lot:

Another good one:

I wear one once I get above 80% 1RM. Sometimes. I don't think it is ever required. But I can go heavier and maintain form with one vs. without. My goal is always good form without, but I'm not so proud to leave weight on racks if a belt allows me to lift more. I always leave it off at lighter weights to let my core get strong.
As for leather vs. neoprene, I have both. When I am not lifting at 1RM, I wear my velcro one because it provides less support and this makes my core work harder while still providing some support. When working at 1RM, I wear my 10mm leather one. No give in that and I can get better core compression with it and that lets me go heavier.
