How can a total newb get started in team sports?

I am interested in joining some type of competitive team activity like a team sport. For example, softball, bowling league, etc. I am hoping someone here can suggest what I might be able to do to achieve this. I have some problems figuring out how to do it though.
1) I am new to this town and I don't really know anyone other than my boyfriend. He has a few friends here that I know but they are not really my friends.
2) I still have like 50 lbs to lose and I have never really been a good athlete. Basically - consider me as if I were a complete and total sports NEWB as in I know nothing etc.
What team sports can I join when I don't know anyone or can't form my own team and don't know how to play any sports? And what team would want someone who its out of shape and overweight but can consistently show up, try hard, (hopefully) improve a little, and be a good sport? I would hate to bring a team "down" or make them lose unless it was one of those "we're just here to have fun" deals.
Thanks

I doubt I can help you much, but I bet there are plenty of sports groups near you that play for fun and not competitively. In my last town, the local newspaper (for a small town) had a number of sports groups that played for fun and were advertising for people of all abilities. Maybe check out the local gyms and see if they have any teams. If bowling is something you want to try, check out the bowling alley. How about a racket sport? You don't need to know many people to play badminton or racket ball or tennis, just one other and a court, and it's a heck of a work out.
Once you build your fitness up through these kinds of things, you can always progress to a team that plays competitively.0
