Food phobias

Ever since I was a toddler with a sippee cups, or a child eating dry cereal, I've had a problem with milk. I'm not lactose intolerant, its just that the thought, taste, smell, or sight of milk makes me gag. If I don't get away from the situation quick enough, I will get sick. This takes place with anything that has a milky texture and/or taste. I can't even drink chocolate milk, Slimfast shakes (that was a disaster), or almond milk.

My issue is that I'm worried about what I can do to make up for deficiencies this may cause. I can only stand the thick texture of yogurt for so long and cheese is so high in calories. Are there any other alternatives that I can turn to?

Thoughts?

What are you concerned about being deficient in? If you find that you are not getting enough protein, there are plenty of non-dairy ways of getting additional protein in your diet. Here are a few examples:

There are non-shake recipes using protein powder -- I frequently see protein pancake recipes on MFP. That could also be helpful.

If you are concerned about getting enough micronutrients, such as Vitamin A, Calcium, Vitamin D, etc - I would suggest tracking carefully your intake and adding a supplement if you find you are not hitting your 100% DV on a consistent basis with your regular diet.

I love all things dairy, but you can certainly have a healthy, balanced diet without it if that's what you want. No reason to force feed yourself something your body simply can't stand.

You don't have to have lactose to be completely healthy. I'm lactose intolorent and drink soy milk (smells and tastes alot different, better tbh). I can understand your phobia though, i have a phobia of pork.

You make some good points. I think I've had the food pyramid drilled into my head a lot, so I'm so set on dairy being a necessity. But you have some good advice, especially about tracking the micronutrients. Thank you for your help!

I am close to the same way. I cannot drink white milk. If you are worried about your calcium, research supplements. I have cheese, Greek yogurt (with added frozen berries as I hate yogurt and I more get the sensation of berries and whip cream), ice cream, pudding.

Experiment and find out what foods contain the nutrient that you are concerned about.

Many will disagree with me, but I don't think we should drink cow's milk. Milk is for kids before they begin to eat solid foods and not cow's milk, but mother's milk. Don't attack me for sounding intolerant of bottle feeding, I'm not intolerant. I'm just stating that babies need milk because they don't eat food yet. Adults eat food so they don't need milk. If you are concerned about low calcium, protein, fat or so forth. Keep track of them, supplement if necessary. If you eat balanced you probably won't need to supplement. I haven't drank milk for years … main reason … same as yours … I don't like it. I used to force myself and found that it was stupid, I'm not going to waste calories on something I despise.
