running shoes

I start beginner triathlon training this week and need a pair of outdoor running shoes.

What qualities should I look for? I can't afford super expensive but need good quality as I have struggled with achilles tendonitis in the past.

You need to go to a specialty running store and get fitted to make sure you have the proper type of shoe for the way you run. Don't just go to Richard's Sporting Goods and pull one off the wall that looks good.

The suggestion to go to a specialty running store is the BEST advice, however, if like me you live in an area without a specialty running store...I would recommend RoadRunnerSports.com Their customer service is tops and will help you into the perfect pair. And they have a "wear 'em and love 'em" 90-day guarantee... They really will let you return shoes that you've run in for 90 days if you don't love them! They also have other great running gear and if you join their "club" (it's only $1.99) you get special discounts and offers on great stuff all the time. I should add that I'm not employed by them, nor am I paid for endorsements  I just love them!

If you don't have a specialty running store in your area, or can't afford their merchandise, check out Saucony's website. They have a great shoe advisor section that lets you put in your gender/activity/arch/etc. and will help you pick a shoe.

Also - it still might be worth it to go to a specialty running store and find the shoe that you want, then order it from Amazon for cheaper. Food for thought!

I went to Runersworld.com and they have a pick your shoes by how you run. It picked Asics for me based on what the wear on my shoes I have now is. So my local store didnt have the Asics they recommended. I ordered them. Long story short I HATE them. They are clunky hurt my feet and made my toes go numb. Just because a website tells you what kind of shoe to get doesnt mean that it will fit what you want them to. I think the go to the store and try them on is the best bet honestly. I wear Nike dual fusion and they recently changed my shoe and discontinued the one I was using. The new model fits horribly. What one person thinks is great could give you problems and hurt in the long run. I like the 90 day return policy on the one site I may even try that one. To date I have 4 pairs of shows from Skechers, Asics, 2 different pairs of New Balance. All ordered on recommendations that I wore once and now the store wont take them back. Because obviously they were worn! Im usually int he store for over and hour trying on every shoe and walking from one side to the other. It may look weird but honestly if Im paying close to $100 for shoes I want what I need not just what someone says I should have now. Good luck :flowerforyou:

^^This. Take note of the shoe they put you in, and size...if you don't like the price, check around and see if you can find it someplace else cheaper. Remember, you do get what you pay for though. If I were training for a legit tri, I wouldn't skimp on shoes. I definitely didn't when I purchased my marathon shoes.

Yup. Shoes are expensive, but less so than having to go to a physical therapist because you effed up your feet.

Thanks everyone. Got some awesome shoes and they were 1/2 price. The fit is good and they offer the right support. Saucony. Appreciate the encouragement to not go cheap. I'd made up my mind to pay whatever I had to pay... and then was surprised to pay 1/2 of it. Yay.

I'd also recommend Amazon if you know what shoe and size you want--they have lots of 50% off deals.

The nice thing about getting fitted and finding "the shoe" is that you can buy more in the future from Amazon/Zappos/6pm guilt free :)
