Obsessed or Determined?

This is my first post; however, I have been dieting and working out since July 1st of this year. I have had amazing results (started at 260lbs and I am at 212lbs as of yesterday), but my friends say that I am obsessed with it. I think in part, they are right, but is that really bad? I eat small, healthy meals/snacks about every 3 hours through out the day and try to eat almost carb free in the evenings. I do a 45 minute fat burning elliptical workout at least 5 days a week and weight training at least 3. I am not on a radical diet (Atkins, Hollywood Cleanse, 3-Day Crash, etc.) and don't feel like I am starving myself because if I feel hungry, I do eat. Don't get me wrong, my friends are proud of me and the success I have had, I just think they are concerned for no reason. So, I need some support from other people that are going through the same thing

My husband said the same thing about me...I think in the beginning you have to be obessed about it to retrain your brain to a healthy lifestyle. I've started to relax a little now and I don't think that I talk about it all the time anymore.

First off I want to congratulate you on your weight loss. I do not think you are obsessed at all. I think you are determined and have a goal and you are working towards that. If anything I think your friends might be a little jealous that you are doing so well eating right and exercising when in fact they might not have the will power to do it. Keep up the good work and don't forget to treat yourself every now and then!!

I don't think that you are obsessed, I think determined is the word here. I think I am the same way, I get mixed reactions from some people too. I have come to the conclusion that they are either jealous of the results or just curious about how you are able to accomplish what so many people think is brain science.
You are doing such a great job! I started out at about the same weight at you, now down to 199 and stuck, but the important thing is to keep pushing through!0 -
I am proud of your resolve, that looks like almost 50 pounds in 3 months? A little fast for lasting results. That doesn't mean that I would hurry to gain them back so that you can lose them slowly, but I would try shifting you focus to getting your daily nutrition requirements. You can set MFP to moniter you iron, calcium, vitamin C, fiber and proteing, and instead of trying to keep under the fat salt sugar limits focus on reaching the nutrient requirements your body needs. As long as you are focussed on health instead of getting skinny you will have lasting benefits. Good job on the weight loss. Best wishes on healthy living.0

I've had friends say the same thing... that I'm obsessed. Then they turn around and crash diet until they have the same results. Don't let friends make you feel like you're doing anything wrong. Your success shows me that you are one determined chick! I don't think it sounds like you're overdoing it. Part of losing weight and dieting is being a little obsessed with it for a while- as long as you can keep off the pounds when you're tired of being obsessed you're doing the right thing! I also agree with nutshel.... I've lost 50 pounds and it took me over a year and I still have a bit of a loose excess skin issue. Fast results well exciting aren't always lasting and you may find them to not be as flattering. Congrats on your loss!!0

Even if you are obsessed- what's wrong with being obsessed with getting healthy? We are all obsessed with something!! Congrats on the great job. As long as you're healthy- let the comments roll off.0

If I was to be obsessed about anything, I would want it to be about losing weight. Being obsessed keeps you focused. You will reach your goal being obsessed. Hey, whatever works!0

I have been told, as well, that I am obsessed with my weight or obsessed with weight-loss in general - The reality is that other people are far more concerned with my weight-loss than I am, clearly, or they wouldn't be so bothered by their own lack of dedication. I find that people who are envious of our successes often try to overshadow all the positive of weight-loss to make themselves feel better. Friends and family should be supportive of your efforts to get healthy, not tell you that you are doing it wrong! If you aren't sacrificing too much of yourself, your personal relationships, work, kids, etc then I would say it's just dedication and commitment - resolve that is NEEDED to lose weight once and for all!

My friend a couple of years was always watching what she ate and always going to the gym. She never wanted to go out because she did not want to drink her calories way. Well here I am a couple years later watching what I eat and exercising like a crazy woman. I love it!!! I really do and you’re not obsessed you’re determined. It’s no fun being fat, overweight, chubby, or whatever you want to call it. It’s going to be great being healthy and wearing nice clothes. So you go girl and don’t let anyone get in your way.0

Maybe it does get annoying (to your friends).... but how else are you going to stay on track!? I find myself not even wanting to go out to eat, or out drinking, b/c I'm worried about the calories. I wouldn't worry about it. As long as you're being healthy

If more people were obsessed or determined as we are, the obesity problem in this country would not be as bad as it is now.
Congratulations on your achievements and keep up the good work, thinking in your health above all.
It is good to have support from family and friends but we need to understand that our weight and health is our problem and we need to take charge of our lives and be responsible and sensible about our eating and exercise habits. If people don't understand or like it, it is their problem. Let them deal with it.
I don't talk much about MFP, diet or exercise anymore because I do get negative comments sometimes. I like what I am doing, it gives me control and I feel good about it.0 -
First off - Great job! You must have a lot of willpower - it sounds like you are getting great results. There is a fine and not-so-straight line between determination and obsession - just remember the adage about too much of a good thing. Make sure to listen to your body and how it feels - if it tells you it needs a break, then its ok to give it one. If you take it easy when your body needs you to then you will be able to sustain the momentum much longer than if you try to overdo it.0

I have just seen your post and feel exactly the same, had a long chat with my sister last night particularly about mettng her for coffee and having A cream cake that I worked out before and after for. I have lost 20lbs
in 8 weeks and am only 4/5 lbs off where I want to be.
I realised last night that I feel guilty on days I don't exercise and log immediately after eating. I am
dertermined but I'm not allowing myself tmwfi relax and unwind. I'm also trying to get pregnant and i guess I'm using the exercise and weight loss as a distraction.
I am resolving as of this week to have 3 afternoons to relax, read a
book, meditate etc to give my body and mind a break and I'm
hoping it will allow me to just be derermined and not obsessed!!
