I wish the gym had a cell phone scrambler!

Or some type of device that as soon as you walked in the door, you couldn't talk on the phone. Today at the gym, I had one guy to my left on the phone rattling away the entire time. To my right, a woman rattling away the entire time. It's so distracting! Yes I have headphones on but in order to block out your conversation, I have to turn up my iPod so loud I'll go deaf! I don't want to be deaf! But I also don't want to hear about your weekend, or your kid's grades, or what you have to get at Target or your personal life problems. If you're on the phone on the machine, then you're not working out hard enough and might as well stop and go outside and talk as loudly as you want.
Ok, rant over. I feel better now. :drinker:

Maybe you should start interjecting into their conversation as though they are talking to you. If they give you a rude, "Butt out", or "This is a private conversation" let them know if they air their business loudly and publicly in a gym, it's everyone's business and to SHUT UP!!!
(I'm in a grumpy mood today, ha!)0 -
Wow! At my old gym (YMCA) there was a "no cell phone" rule. Once inside, the only place a cell was permissable was in the lobby! I know a lot had to do with the whole camera phone threat, but it was REALLY nice to not hear people on the phone all the time!0

Find out if your gym has an anti-phone policy.
If they do not, you can politely get the persons attention and say that while you're sure their call is important, you're also pretty sure that they don't want you, or anyone else for that matter, to know their children's names, locations and schedules.0 -
LOL! I totally agree with this! People always ask me (my circle of people) why I excuse myself to go outside and talk on the phone or what not. They have asked if I'm telling secrets...and why do I need privacy...I tell them I do it for their sake and not mine! People don't need to know or want to know my daily stuff so I'm not going to irritate them with it. Especially if I'm somewhere where they cannot escape it. People on their cell phones (for a long period of time) at the doctor's office, for example, drive me nuts! It's a quiet environment and I cannot walk away or I may not hear my name called. GRRRR! I'm grumpy today too.0

I LOVE this idea! That is hilarious and brilliant! I like to talk on my phone when i'm walking around my neighborhood, but when i have time to go to the gym (which isn't often...) I am there to focus and bust my @ss for the small window i have!0 -
Hey, at least they weren't farting or coughing on the treadmill or machine beside you. Ug!!!0

I can understand if it's a quick phone call, that's fine. But anything else is just rude.
I admit I am extremely sensitive to sound, and I try to be tolerant. I really do. But when someone gets on a machine after I'm on it and starts going on and on, it's inconsiderate. If I choose to get on a machine where the person next to me is already on the phone, well then I either deal with it or find a different machine to use.0 -
Even better is that same woman I mentioned started using weight machines...WHILE HOLDING THE PHONE UP TO HER EAR STILL TALKING!0
-
This drives me nuts as well. I don't see how people can workout and talk on the phone. Not much of a workout if you ask me. When my heart rate is up I can't carry on much of a conversation. I can get out a few words but geeze. I've seen people on the phone the entire time I'm there doing my cardio. Pure craziness. I'd probably butt into their conversation as well if I was feeling fiesty. HAHA...0

When I belonged to a gym there were signs everywhere that no cell phones were allowed once you past the front desk. Its so annoying. I love working out at home. Dont have to worry about cell phones, little skinny girls in booty shorts making you feel bad or guys that look like popeye...lol0

 or worse, talking loudly on the phone, coughing and farting.
I was just thinking about this today at the gym, I wonder about the people who get on the treadmill or any other cardio machine and go a snails pace and talk on the phone the whole time, these are the same people that are shocked when they don't lose any weight.
My opinion is if you can't be alone with your own thoughts for 30 minutes to get a REAL workout in then you need to buy equipment and workout at home...0 -

Hey now, I even get bored with my own thoughts! I plug in my earplugs to the TV but I'm still there for 1- 1.5 hours :P hahaha0 -
Psh. Luckily I'm switching gyms. at my old gym trashy girls would come in and sit on the equipment to talk or text on their phones.
That's right, sit. They wouldnt even use the machines. they were almost always there with a fit friend of theirs and their fat butt would hog up my machines while they weren't do anything! Ugh, shut up and get out!0 -
I leave the cell phone in the car when I hit the gym.0

One time I politley (yes, politely) told this woman who was on the phone (and I could clearly hear her conversation over my headphones five machines away from me) that she was being disruptive...WELL. That didn't go over so well. She told me I should mind my own business. I told her "I can't help it when all I can hear is YOURS!" It almost got ugly. as I walked away, someone else thanked me for telling her to quiet down.
And a while ago, there were mid-30's guys on the treadmill talking to each other. There was an older lady on the machine next to them. They're all "F this, F that," cursing every other word. I didn't notice her getting upset, but it was making me so mad! I went up to them and said "Excuse me, but do you realize there's a lady next to you?" They said yes. I told them they should have some respect and watch their mouths.
I'm not known for keeping my mouth shut. :laugh:0 -
Nice job!
As I get older I'm becoming more vocal about how annoying folks can be.0 -
I also wish there was a phone scrambler thingy in restaurants. I can't take your order while you're on the phone because you shoo me away...yet you get annoyed that I haven't taken your order and you're hungry! :noway:0

I used to work for Starbucks and the rude people with cell phones would get passed over when I was taking orders to try and get drinks ready faster then when they would ask why the people behind them got their orders before them I would tell them it was because they were so busy talking on their cells that they didn't pay attention when I was taking orders, it only took once or twice for them to get off their stupid phones so they could get in and out quicker.0 -

Yet somehow you manage to entertain yourself without a cell phone! :laugh:0 -
My gym has an anti-phone policy.
Today at lunch in the ladies locker room I shot this chick a look and then asked her to go outside and continue her argument with her boyfriend. (She was arguing over the number of guests for their wedding).
Some people think that the rules just don't apply to them.
My workout time is just that time for me.

I'm the same way, My husband (never fails) will call me when he knows I'm out with someone and wants to talk, and talk, and talk. I always have to tell him... I'm being rude to "whoever I'm with" and need to go. Not to mention I just don't like to talk on the phone much and would rather be alone when I am. I really dislike when I have to listen to others phone conversations for extended periods of time, and/or personal issues. Some calls can't be helped, but if its a long one it should be taken to a more private place.0 -

That is AWESOME! I used to work at Zales and had a few who wanted to talk on the phone and have my undivided attention, I tended to find a different customer or 'busy' work to do until the call ended.
Oh and to tag onto the booty shorts thing... lol. I never wore those when i was skinny cause they ride up, I didn't want my 'rear' hanging out when I was trying to workout, thats so uncomfortable and ridiculous.0 -
Most of the girls I see at the gym in bootie shorts have absolutely NO business being in them, when your *kitten* hangs out and your thighs look like the dimples on golf balls you should turn and walk away from the kiddie section of the store and find some shorts that fit.0
