Juice Cleanse??

Moderator's Note: Thread locked at request of Original Poster.

Okay, so i think I need to do something to make a shift or confuse my body or something to get outta my long plateau and hopefully lose just a tad more! I just want to get rid of some body fat in a few select areas. But anyway, who knows more about juice cleanses? How do they work? Do they work? What to do and all that!!! I could use something to change things up a little and hopefully be ready for summer!

    This.

If you're at a plateau, chances are you're either eating more than you think you are or overestimating how many calories you're burning in exercise. Get a food scale and weigh your portions. That's what I finally did after being at a plateau for three months, and I've lost weight every week since I started weighing.
  • Yes, I know I cannot spot reduce my whole point was to try and get off the plateau and lose my small amounts of fat left. Everyone says that you need to change up the routine and thought this for maybe 3 days or so would be a good change up. Any opinions from someone with a little more knowledge on it would be lovely :)

I'm sure no one will agree with me, but my wife and I did an eight day juice cleanse before our wedding last year. We didn't really consider it a cleanse, as we were ridiculously healthy back then, anyway. But I get your point. I like keeping my body guessing and myself a little out of it and confused.

As far as the juice goes, it should be fresh. We have a juice that uses centrifugal force to extract the liquids. You should by no means go on a fast or cleanse or whatever using store bought juice. Too much sugar and badness in there, IMO.

We do our best to juice organic for the ones that count (look up the dirty dozen, twelve fruits / veggies that should always be organic, due to high levels of pesticide or whatever else). We also make sure to juice a crazy ton of veggies, not just fruits. Spinach, chard, kale, beets, red cabbage, green cabbage, asparagus, cucumber, bell paper, tomato, celery, carrot, etc. As for fruits, go for the gold, nutritionally speaking: lemons, limes, organic apples, oranges, melons, strawberries, etc. Make them superfoods as often as possible and organic where necessary.

Now, probably don't do this for eight days with nothing else. It's effing intense. You should probably just do one day of juice fasting at a time, if you want to fast. Otherwise, just replace a meal with the fresh juice you make. It makes you feel terrific and, despite what all of the haters will say, you won't suddenly lose muscle or go into a coma or pass out. Just be sure to listen to your body, get plenty of water, and don't exercise intensely if you do a juice fast. Just yoga, stretching or walking.

Have fun! Let me know if you have other questions.

Like the above said! ETA: The above being the first poster.

But I do love juicing/blending. It's delicious and nutritious! However, I do not use it as a cleanse or meal replacement. You can add in juicing/blending for the health benefits. It's awesome. Will the extra fiber help you go a little more? Yes if you aren't used to it. I tend to blend rather than juice because it's more smoothie like.

Thank you for a post that actually has experience behind it. And yea, I doubt I could handle ONLY juice for too long because I love my food. But I definitely want to drop my plateau and think it would be a good change up! I'm going to the store soon writing down all the new veggies I will need and all that! Thank you for the the help!!

    OP here is my advice:

    1. get a food scale and weigh/measure/log everything. Be 100% honest with your logging and make sure that you are in a 500 per day calorie deficit.
    2. pick up a copy of starting strength and/or new rules of lifting for woman and start a heavy lifting program using compound movements.
    3. repeat until you reach desired goals.

that is all ...no cleanses, magical diets, etc...

Never done the cleanse thing but I do enjoy the occasional fresh juice cocktail.

I have a juicer and I drop in one cucumber, one green apple, one jalepeno pepper, and mix it with 25% tomato juice.

It's delicious. I can't drink booze anymore but would love to try it with some rum or vodka.

That's all I know about it.

Natural juice is great but it doesn't have any magical properties that are going to make you lose weight. You lose weight on a juice cleanse because juice is not calorie dense and in order to get even 1000 calories a day in you would have to be guzzling the stuff constantly. Juice cleanses are just a clever guise for starving yourself but people think it's healthy because of all the special vitamins and "toxins" that are being removed.

So yea you'll lose weight if you drink nothing but juice for several days but don't be surprised when you put it all back on shortly thereafter.

Perhaps there isn't a need for a "cleanse" but juicing is a great way to get nutrients that you may not be consuming in your diet.

The documentary "Hungry for Change" http://www.hungryforchange.tv/ has some great information on eating and juicing.

Also see FMTV.com (Food Matters TV) for more information on juicing.

Yes, you'll lose the weight. But you'll gain it all back. Out of the worst that could happen to you, that's probably the best of all the outcomes (depends on what type of cleanse you plan on doing).

Your body already takes care of getting rid of all the toxins you don't need, you don't need a cleanse, our bodies are pretty efficient already.

    Just do this:

Listen everyone. I did not post this for a big dumb fight about it. Yes, everyone has their own opinions! I asked for people that knew what juicing was like or about not for people to tell me I poop and pee so why drink juice. Thank you ndj1979 I appreciate your advice as well! I'm getting a food scale and cracking down on measurements as well! I'm not looking for a magical diet. Just a change in my routine for a little while to potentially help my weight loss. I responded to her post because if I irritate her so badly because of which posts I chose to respond to she can complain to someone who cares. Now, if we could all end this lovely arguing I have plenty of advice now and clearly shouldn't post questions on here anyway. If I can't post a question without people being rude or dumb and the fight then why post one at all.

Thank you for the advice everyone! :)

I doubt I'd be only juicing because lets be honest I dont like being hungry lol but it would probably give me a higher calorie deficit. But changing my calorie intake every now and then is good for the change in routine I'm looking to do so that was another point I was thinking might be good. We'll see how I do but I think I'm at least going to try and juice with food as well for now! Thank you

Pretty sure I did not advocate an eight day cleanse. Pretty sure I said we didn't consider it a cleanse and I did not recommend the eight day part. I think the advice I gave was one 24 hour period, if she wanted to be a little intense (one day of fasting, especially with nutrients, is not detrimental), or to replace a meal to help with the plateau thing. I just wanted to share a positive experience. I have no idea why people need to get on and start getting sarcastic or dogging on people. This happens way too often...

I don't juice cleanse. I just drink a LOT of water on a daily basis. That's all the body needs.
