Building home gym: Bumper Plates a must?

I'm hoping to eventually get into some crossfit type training.

Had i not done some looking into this type of training, it would never have crossed my mind to get bumper plates.

They only kind of 'crossfit type' lifts i have done are basically deadlift and clean and press. I have to admit that i haven't done either since highschool lol, but we got it done just fine with iron weights.

I almost never go for one rep max... and i honestly don't see myself dropping the weight that often. Does this mean i dont really need bumper plates? or does this mean i don't really want to do crossfit lol.

because if its mostly a bunch of one rep maxing, i guess i'm not that interested, and if its typical to go into the 5-8 range, i don't see myself needing to drop the weight much.

I do CrossFit and I have a home gym. Like most people, I have iron weights that I wouldn't want to drop in my garage. Would I prefer to have bumper plates, sure, I think this would open me up to more traditional WOD type workouts where "dropping" a weight is more efficient and maybe safer but can I still get a workout in my garage with the iron plates, sure. CrossFit does focus on Olympic lifts like Snatch, Clean Jerk, Overhead Squats and Front Squats where you will find it difficult to go "heavy or long" if you plan not to drop the weight once in a while. An overhead snatch is more about technique then strength so when you miss the technique your forced to drop it. These type of lifts may not be in your cards....If your doing deadlifts and clean and press, I don't think bumper plates are a must. I personally and looking to add bumper plates to my equipment, they are just expensive and like I said, I have a CrossFit membership so I don't really need to have the same set up at home.

i'm on a concrete floor as well, but workouton 3/4'' rubber mats.

No way am i going to spring for 250 ish a 45 plate that i see on the high end stuff.

Saw some on rogue fitness that were a lot more reasonably priced. i think i'll probably get those, they should be good enough to for one person to use fairly agressively. DOn't think you really need to pay top dollar if they aren't going to under go the frequency of use they'd see at a gym
