Does boxing burn a lot of calories?

I made a similar post to this, but it didn't get many responses.. I have been boxing- using my hanging heavy bag- and I saw on this site that it says that an hour work out punching the heavy bag burns around 550 calories, is that true? Is this a good fat burning, calorie burning workout? Info please!

Thanks!

Too many variables to give any kind of accurate answer. If you're just standing there punching the bag, that would be on the low end of things.

If you are moving your feet and putting a lot of power into the bag you would get a great burn. I imagine it would be hard for most people to go hard for a full hour though.

If done right, yes, boxing burns heaps of calories. But if you can keep it up for an hour then you aren't doing the high-burning sort of boxing. To put it in perspective professional boxers train for 12 three-minute rounds, which is a total of 36 minutes. It's an extremely high intensity and low duration sort of exercise. Personally when I'm going extremely hard out (and I'm pretty fit) I struggle to get more than 3 or four three-minute rounds. And by the end of that you can wring out my shirt!

ETA: Make sure you are incorporating kicks and leg-work into your routine. Just punching with your arms and standing in one place won't be high on the calorie burn. Personally I just love boxing for releasing aggression!!
