When should core training start?

I try to engage my core with most of the exercises I do but when do you actually start dedicating time for core with planks, et al.

Is it at a particular body fat goal?

Try the Insanity workout - "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" All about core and cardio. However as to the when to work hard on the core i would wait for the end of your overall workout so you dont tire it too much before hand!

I started doing planks at home as my sole exercise before I joined the gym.

this, but I would say you should wait until you have melted off some body fat …

Way too many times I see a lot of beginners spending like 30 minutes a day on abs when they would be better serviced focusing on lifting and then cardio on off days to burn off fat, which will reveal the ab muslces you already have …once you have dropped x amount of weight and body fat you can dedicate more time to your abs…I only train mine once a week for about 35-40 minutes…

compound movements work your abs too...
