Hi everyone, I'm Jayne 40 years young and Mummy to Sam nearly 22 months and step-Mum to Max, 12. I've been using MFP for 4 weeks now and have lost 9lb so far. I have a lot of health problems for which I take a lot of medication including steroids (been taking them since February). Is anyone taking them and have they affected your weight loss at all?

If anyone wants to add me as a friend to give/receive encouragement and advice it would be greatly welcomed.

Jayne

One of the primary side effects of steroids is increased hunger, so that will challenge you.

I was on a course of steroids for about a year, and during that time, it was very difficult to lose weight. Be sure to also approach this topic with your doctor.

I weaned off the steroids, and my weight loss became easier, but honestly, I don't think my body's been the same since.

    Just my experience.:flowerforyou:

I'm not currently on them, but they are part of the reason I am here! I had alot of ear problems, so my doctor put me on prednisone for almost two months...in those two months, I gained (are you ready for this?) FORTY FIVE POUNDS! And of course they didn't just fall off after I quit the prednisone, in fact I put on another 20 since coming off. It was terrible, because it was 3 months before my wedding which meant that I had to buy a new wedding dress! I will never for any reason EVER take steroids again!

Hi Jayne, I have had to take three courses of steroids since January this year; yes they make me eat like a horse and I just resolve to lose the weight once I finalise the course. It is not easy, but it can be done. I have taken them periodically for nearly 20 years and have to admit they are a life saver - thank goodness there is a drug to facilitate a remission!

The battle is purely psychological, therefore keep a strong resolve to lose the weight - make sure you weigh yourself regularly and record everything you eat - good luck! :)

I've taken prednisone many times over the past 10 years and am quite familiar with the insatiable appetite and trademark "moon face" that develops.

My only advice would be to count your calories. When the hunger sets in, try to eat low calorie fruits and veggies - that way you can eat MORE of them. I found that it really didn't matter what I was eating, as long as I was eating. Try to make it healthy stuff that won't bust your daily calorie goal, and that you wont' feel horrible for consuming.

I feel for you. Take good care :)
