shin splints?

i've started to properly exercise within the past two weeks and am currently enjoying jump rope as its easy to do within the comfort of my own home and so don't have to leave the house like i would do if i were to run. However, I keep getting the worst shin splints whenever I'm doing it and was wondering a) is there anyway to stop this happening? and b) are there any better exercises for those of us who do get shin splints?
thanks!
thanks!

Are you stretching before and after exercise? I've found that to help.0

I've heard potassium can help with this.

Properly fitted shoes?
Stretch after (I use an "orb" dense foam ball)
Ice/elevate
Put a hard ball on the floor and run your arches over it

I got them when I started a jogging program on an indoor track. Old fashioned gym with balcony track around the basketball court. It was the hard surface and too much impact on a hard surface. What kind of footwear do you have? If you jump rope on hard surface with no cushioning on your feet it could be the cause. Otherwise, substitute a brisk walking program until they go away0
