10 lb loss with some recompositioning (pics)

2014 is the year I regain control over my body and health. I have two young daughters and have spent most of the past six years either pregnant or breastfeeding. Between caring for them, working full-time, and life in general, my own health and fitness has taken a back seat. I want my girls to grow up with a strong mother that has a healthy body image.

My weight gain has stayed mostly in the tummy area (like many moms) and I'm so excited that a change in diet and a workout routine heavy on strength training has helped me lose 10 pounds and at least 4-5% body fat in the past 3 months! I am 5'7" and 32 years old.

    You look wonderful!

After two children my tummy held relentlessly to that fat too. It feels so good to lose it! Well done

Thanks! I'm eating at about a 500 calorie deficit with the goal of getting in 100 g of protein a day. Otherwise I don't limit any particular foods. I almost always eat back my exercise calories. I workout 3-4 times per week with the emphasis on strength building. I do HIIT for my cardio with an occasional Zumba class for fun.

Anyone else working to lose the tummy?
  • AWESOME! I know you said you are into strength training, but could you post a sample routine? I do 3 boot camp classes a week and 2-3 times in the gym doing cardio and weights. I am 10llbs down but my belly is giving me a tough time.

I usually split mine into 2 upper body days and a leg day. I do not do any isolated abdominal exercises like crunches. My upper body days involve dumbbell presses, tricep extensions, lat pulldowns, and rows. My leg days include squats (regular and plie), step-ups, and side leg extensions. My warmup is 5 minutes on the elliptical and stretching and cooldown is 5 minutes on the recumbent bike.

Wow, that's awesome! What type of strength training routine are you doing? I still have at least 25 lbs to lose, but I was just despairing that my mommy tummy doesn't seem to be budging. Right now I am doing body pump once a week and it is making a difference in my arms. Hopefully I will start seeing some changes in the middle, too!

Ooops, just saw you already posted your routine! How often do you increase the weights? I figure I will hold steady until I make it all the way through a class without failures--currently I still can't get all my reps in with the tiny weights I'm using.

I increase weekly. My routine is
    Light weight -12 reps
    Med weight -8 reps
    Heaviest weight -6 reps
    Light weight -12 reps
