Reason for splurges

Hi. Just wondering if some of you more researched folk had any insight into splurges. Is there a metabolic benefit or reason to have a higher calorie "splurge" meal weekly/monthly or is it mainly a psychological thing? I understand conceptually needing to not cut out foods, or groups of foods, and having an allowance for a special occasion and understand not limiting yourself or your lifestyle to something torturous just to be in calorie deficits. I don't feel deprived, have had some higher calorie meals as birthdays come up etc. However, I feel pretty good cruising along with my allotted calories. But, then I wonder if having that calorie "boost" now and again does something metabolically speaking. Better to go weeks/months at fairly consistent deficits, or have some "swing" in my linear path to a lower BMI?!
