Exercise Calculation Accuracy

Options
I entered in some cardio I did today and the calories burnt were surprisingly high, so I went onto another website and entered in the same information, and it said i had burnt less than half of what MFP had set.
....
I did 25mins of walking at 3miles p/h
MFP-191 or sumthing like that
Other Site- 79

Walking net calories: .3 x weight (in lbs) x distance (in miles)

so, 25 min @ 3mph would be 1.25 miles; if you weighed 200lbs you would burn about 75 cal walking 1.25 miles (these are net calories ie additional calories burned directly attributed to the activity)

I've have a HRM and can vouch for the inaccuracy of both the MFP calculations and the ones given by their partner site, MapMyWalk. Brians example is saner, but when I did my 9 mile walk this weekend I burnt about 1300 calories per my HRM. His calculation doesn't include anything about pace though, which probably affects your burn rate per mile. Answer? Best bet is a HRM. Can't afford one? Whatever you do don't eat back the number of calories that MFP says you've earned. Find a formula that seems the most reasonable given your pace and distance. Don't trust the HRM's on gym equipment entirely either. They seem to be almost as generous about handing out calorie burn numbers as MFP. This site was closer to my number. http://www.healthstatus.com/perl/calculator.cgi
