Lifting advice for novice runners

Hey guys! I'm sure someone has covered this topic before, but I don't feel like digging through the past forums today to look.
I have been introducing some weight lifting into my routine for the last few weeks in preparation for this week (my first week of half marathon training). I have been lifting heavy stuff with fewer reps, but today I read somewhere that runners should be using lighter weights and doing higher weights.
What are your thoughts? I like the heavier lifting (it makes me feel cool and caters to my laziness because I don't have to do a bunch of reps) but if switching to lighter weights is better I'm willing to do that too.
Thanks in advance!
