Strength Training

Morning all,
I wanted to get a bit of advice from people in the know about building up some strength.
Predominantly I run, but I would really like to get stronger and have been doing a number of exercises to try and build up some strength, such as 'body pump' another toning class using weights and bands and also have been doing some body weight exercises at home.
I don't want to bulk, but I would certianly like to improve/increase a bit of muscle. I have started to notice a bit of a difference - my stomach is looking more toned than it has ever been and my running speeds have improved from this cross training. (I have also been doing spinning classes).
I eat to maintenance calories and use a Fitbit and HRM to ensure I have an accurate figure of my calories burned.
Does anyone have any tips or advice? Good workout programmes? Regularity of training? I've been doing cardio for so long that strength training is quite new ground to me!
Thanks guys. :flowerforyou:

Check out 5x5 strength training and body weight training. From your profile, I'm assuming you are female, you will not bulk up like a guy so don't even stress about that.
Also, nerdfitness.com has a really simple full body 'build your own' type thing somewhere - if you can find it, it's great for beginners.0 -
^ 5x5 is good for beginners.. Don't stress about 'bulking up' because even men find it difficult to, and they're full of testosterone. Women lack testosterone, thus it would be impossible to become bulking on a short term.
You can head over to www.jefit.com and try search for a program that best suites your living style. Don't bother searching anything like 'strength building for women' or 'for girls' because there is no reason a program can not be for both men and women.
Please be sure to search videos on youtube on HOW to do the exercises, before attempting them. This is to avoid poor form and avoid injury!0 -
There's a multitude of options. Do you want to go to a gym or do things at home? 2-3x week full body routines are good to start with. A couple push, pull and squatting movements will cover most everything. Nerdfitness, strength unbound and convict conditioning are a few places to start if you'd like to go the body weight route.0
