HRM vs. Database

OK, so I purchased a CVS HRM. I got a great deal on it so I thought I would give it a try. I think I got ripped off. At first, I accidentally got a size Large so I took it back and traded it for a Medium. It fits good; however, I did my elliptical for 2 min. at a pretty decent pace and sweated my bottom off. I felt great afterward. I logged it here at 216 calories burned, on the HRM it showed 47...way off.

Any suggestions as to why it would be that far off? I know I burned more than 47.

I guess that's why you should only eat 1/2 of your exercise calories.

Does this HRM have a chest strap? The cals burned are only going to be as accurate as it getting your HR (had my chest strap move in the water and it stops reading heart rate for a couple min for example), if the HR rate reading drops off or cuts out it would affect your reading.
sadly with HRMs you seem to get what you pay for. Did you mean 20 min?

I am guessing you worked out for more than 2 minutes... I have a different HRM (Polar FT-7) and it is very accurate and usually pretty close to the database. A couple of things might be wrong with yours. You might not have been getting a good or continuous read of your heart rate if the strap wasn't tight enough or on correctly. Your HRM might require an accurate measurement of VO2 max, which I have heard other people talk about to be accurate. You have to do that at a gym I think. (Mine doesn't require it) You might have entered some settings wrong, check them again. Hope you figure it out. How does yours measure your heart rate?

For example, I did 66 minutes on my elliptical yesterday. I am 5'8", 36 years old, 176 pounds and was working out on resistance level 6 of 8, My HRM gave me 742 calories burned, data base said 798. So if I'd worked 20 minutes roughly I would have burned about 1/3 of that or around 240 calories.
  • i bought a cvs HRM also and lets just say its somewhere in my car. POS! I should have spent the extra money and got a really good one like I was advised. Now im out the $ i spent at CVS and gotta go buy a decent one. Live and learn.

My HRM shows WAY lower results than this site .... This site isn't too accurate either IMHO ... just ball park I think, but I don't think the Heart Rate monitor is right either

    For instance

I did a 13 mile run in 1 hour and 4 minutes (HAULLING BUTT) and HRM showed 147 Cals burned, Ithink not! haha

On the Treadmill that would have been over 300 cals ...

I just say 'Hey I sweat my butt off, I'm burning something!'

I'm learning that the hard way with a lot of things lately. I've decided I'm not buying anything going forward without researching it. Fortunately, I only paid $12.99 for this one (regularly like $49.99).
