Here's a good article about the topic. This basically points at Stronglifts 5x5, Starting Strength and other "five exercise" programs.
TLDR answer: Yes, do the big movement exercises, but also do the ancillary work to help with those lifts and muscle groups. You will eventually stall and stop progressing if you only do five exercises. You need the extra work to build up unbalanced muscles. Once your form is good weak individual muscle groups is what slows you down.
