Can someone explain to me why people are so determined to eat below their calorie goal? I see a lot of my fellow MFPers congratulating each other for being under. MFP, IIFYM, and Scooby already apply a deficit for us. Food is fuel.
Not many people take the time to choose foods that meet the goal exactly. Under does not necessarily mean too low.0 -
i try to eat about 50-100 under, in case of errors. i dont weigh every single thing, and in case i picked the wrong thing in the database, although i'm getting better at picking the right ones. but i def make sure i eat my bmr. my bmr and my tdee -20% is pretty close though, so i just make sure i'm above my bmr and not over. so far so good.
i like all the "completed" entries on my friends, unless that person is fasting or something. (i just cant get behind some of the cleanses and such) i do want to give support to those who take the time to log all day, even (or maybe especially if) they are over for the day.0 -

In my opinion, the fact that my friends are even logging and completing their diary deserves a 'like'. 'A' for effort in most cases.
I try to motivate and encourage my friends with healthy eating tips and suggestions every now and then as a general 'post' but usually don't view everyone's diary each day. "Ain't nobody got time for that". lol
I also agree with the previous post that you can just go into your settings and disable the feature; problem solved. :indifferent:
I end up being 50-100 calories under coal each day (without eating my exercise calories back) to account for any small miscalculations in my weighing or measuring. Typically a 'cheat day' for me once every week or so means coming pretty close to eating back most of my exercise calories.
It's interesting to see so many people using MFP and have such different views on things. :drinker:0 -
Really depends how much under calorie goal. But I know it's hard some days to stay under (even by 1 calorie), so a 'like' is a good way of showing encouragement, IMO. If someone is under by over 100 calories with a small goal though, I just shake my head.0

I think there are three options that the logic in MFP will recognize. You are under your goal, exactly at your goal, or over your goal. You could be below your goal by 10 calories, and to me, that's something to "like".
It also depends on how you have myfitnesspal set up. Even though i'm trying to lose weight, i have my calories as if I want to maintain. The reasoning behind this is I want to quickly see how much of a calorie deficit I have every day, and I see that with the 'calories remaining'. I try to keep my deficit between 500-1000 calories. so, I'm "under" my calorie goal, that's a good thing since my 'goal' as far as MFP is concerned is to maintain, but really I want a deficit.0 -

yessss ^^^^^^ like why is everyone so obsessed with someone elses deficits and eating like i definitely dont starve myself .. and i am sticking with something i can live with ppl telling me to eat more like i already eat 3 meals a day and 4 snacks sometimes when i work out i have more calories available doesnt mean im gonna force myself at the end of the day to eat it if im not hungry ( i ll definitely make up for those cals on the weekend) ppl telling me to eat more but eating rolls and biscuits every morning and wonder why the scale going up -_- wooo ok sorry i just had to vent about that lol0 -
On the contrary, I "like" the notification on my home page because I know my MFP friends TRIED AND LOGGED that day. I sometimes miss my goals for the day, I try to do IIFYM but have been struggling lately. For me, I see it as a support thing, a "one day at a time, we are all still trying" thing. I try not to judge too much on what's eaten or how much. It's consistancy and information that helps each one of us see what we're doing right and what we're doing wrong.

Same here! I like all of them... under or not... I'm super happy for the guys that did great, but equally supportive of the guys that went over or even more under than they should... it takes courage to put yourself out there for the (sometimes extremely) critical MFP "public"....0 -

Because the bigger deficit I have during the week, the more I can go crazy on the weekend!
This^^^ Through the week I will sometimes be 200-300 calories under goal (but always eating at least 1200...my goal is 1420). I do this because I KNOW I will be over on the weekend. I think as long as someone is AVERAGING a healthy amount of calories that it is fine.0 -
I do get zhe butthurt from seeing consistent 600 calorie days, but then again I can't even get with 1200 calorie diets. I'll hit the like on a 1200 calorie diet person for sure but 400 calories is just a bit outside of my comfort zone.
That said I agree this ain't no nanny site. So if you don't hit the like for under, would you hit it for over? by 3000 calories? I'm pretty hypocritical in that I disabled my "notify when you complete your diary" setting a long time ago but still review friends' diaries. Mine's public though.0 -
I like other members diaries because they took the time to track their food, not because their under or over their calories. I also enjoy getting likes for my diary each day, or a workout like because it is motivating and helps me stay accountable knowing others will be able to see all I ate that day.0

When I like that status, it really just means I see they are logging and taking an active role in becoming healthy. Its the same on Facebook, when someone asks for prayer for a situation and I like the post. I dont like that they are having pain in their life, I am just showing them I stand with them and will be praying. Everyone probably uses the Like for different reasons.
This is why I like the statuses as well, for me that person atl east knows someone thought of them that day. I am by no means an expert on exercise or nutrition, so I'm not going to pick a party someones diary when I dont' kow the entire story.0 -
I don't know if you've heard of the pact app, anyway for the fruit and veggies you show photos of veggies and people allow or deny them. I find myself shocked quite often what people want to count... roast potatoes/carrots....
Why aren't roast potatoes and roast carrots vegetables??
Anyway, not being on facebook, Im really not into liking at all - I don't think I have ever liked anyones post.
Have put some comments sometimes but not just clicked like.
Actually I really dont think Im a good MFP friend - have never sent a friend request but have accepted people who have sent ones to me.
Not sure why they want to friend me and I confess I am not an active friend - if they change their mind and de friend me, that is ok.0 -

well, there is a difference between eating 1560 calories and be under your 1600 calorie goal or eating 1000 calories to be under that 1600 calorie goal. If they are around 100 cals or less under/over their calorie goal, it is an achievement.0

I like and congratulate my friends when it says "stayed under their calorie goal" or when it just says they completed their diary. Because:
1) Nobody is going to get it spot on. If they're 3 or 10 or 50 calories under it will say they are under. I think this is acceptable. I always check the diary first.
2) I am saying well done for logging on every day and keeping your diary. It is an acknowledgment of the work they are putting in, even if they haven't gotten it perfected yet. I certainly wasn't doing that great when I first started logging. I was awful, actually.
3) Most people I see are under because they exercise and didn't eat back ALL of their calories. This is perfectly acceptable to me too.
It is NOT that I don't understand how weight loss works or I think people have to starve themselves. I do not like the diary status of someone who only ate 400 calories that day. But I do like the person who ate 1345/1400 etc...
Most of the folks on my FL have different goals. There are some that are eating for gains and aggressively attacking the weights and some that are stay at home mothers looking to just drop a few pounds. When someone has a goal of 2600 calories and ends the day with only 1800, I still like the post, because they usually put a note on there on what kind of day it was for them, be it little exercise or some kind of recovery day, or just a really hard to eat day. I like it because there isn't an empathy button, just a like button, and I want them to know that I read it, saw the entries and am trying to support them. If there is a lady who has a daily goal of 1300 and she manages to only consume up to 1200, then I'll still like it, since she went so far as to log in the 1 girl scout cookie she ate on top of her other entries. People will not always succeed and by liking the update I'm attempting to offer my support. I also like making witty comments about the food they eat and feel like a like will let them know I'm teasing them good naturally, and not to take me too seriously.0 -

No idea why roasted carrots would not count as vegetables. Aren't they?
I am always told that potatoes, like corn, don't count so much as a vegetable, as they do a starch. I don't fully get it, because that sort of implies they are carb heavy. Aren't carbs what comprise most vegetables? Certainly not a ton of protein or fat, unless you're talking beans (legumes), rice (grain) or avocado (a fruit, technically?).
To the OP, I don't think I understand your concern. Being under a calorie goal... doesn't that equate to weight loss? For many people (not all), weight loss is THE goal here. I know we're all in for lifetime fitness, but for me and quite a few others, lookin' good is the goal and that starts with massive weight loss for a lot of us. If we weren't under our calorie goals, we'd probably be maintaining or gaining, but that would depend on each individual's goal.0 -
Please don't worry so much about what people think. They are probably people you will never even see in real life. What is important is your health.I know what you mean. I constantly eat under my calorie goal and if I go over it I feel terrible because my friends will see it. This results in me adding in cardio like walking around the mall for 4 hours or other stuff that I wouldn't normally count. It is great for accountability but mentally it is terrible for me. I'm eating 1000 calories a day which is unhealth, I know it it. But I can't help it because I have this "I must eat under my goal" mentality.
Sometimes MFP can be great but on other days I'm afraid that it will make me have an eating disorder.0
