GNC Total Lean and other supplements

I know that the MFP community is largely anti-supplement and that is ok. I just wonder how products like the below sell and can post their promises everywhere if they aren't at least somewhat true?

http://www.gnc.com/GNC-Total-Lean-Burn-60-153-Cinnamon-Flavored/product.jsp?productId=2667934

Please don't just write that they don't work and I'm gullible for thinking they might. That's not helpful. I am wondering if anyone can explain how they can put those facts (up to 60% more calorie burn, etc) if they are just plain false? OR if they are true but there are negative side effects that I should be aware of?

I know losing weight is largely diet and exercise but do products like these provide an extra boost? I'm fine with being talked out of using the products, I just want reasons instead of "just because."

I have never been able to use stuff like this due to side effects like being shaky, irritable or racing heart with certain ones. I would say its your body and your choice to try them, but use caution.
I think a lot of people don't mess with them, aside from side effects, it is basically a crutch. If it works, do you plan on taking it forever? If so is it safe to use long term?

Again its your choice to try it or not. Good luck.

They can put those facts up because supplements are not regulated by the FDA. See points 1, 2 and 3 in the "How Are Supplements Regulated?" section. http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm050803.htm

Then they put this disclaimer at or near the bottom of the label, typically in tiny letters:

    * These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
