I have been training crossfit since november and i wear my hrm about 50% of the time to gauge calories burnt. I take it on a wod by wod basis. If we are having a heavy lifting day or we arent working on a time cap (so it ends up being less cardio and more strength) i log it as strength/weight training. if it is a team wod or much more intense cardio wod with running involved ill log it as circuit training and the calories estimated are closer to actual. note that i say closer because there can be some days (like last night for example) where i trained clean and jerk and snatch for an hour and burned over 300 calories but i logged it as strength training for less because sometimes i feel it is better to underestimate calories burned rather than to over estimate.

Basically the best way to know how much you are burning doing crossfit is to wear a heart rate monitor. If you are pushing yourself and using heavy weights in your wods youll be burning 500+ calories per half hour which is what i usually find. It all depends on the type of wod, if its an amrap or time cap and you are pushing more you will get your cardio at the same time as strength. if you are working more on technique and higher weights with lower reps log it as strength training.

hope this long winded reply helps if at all! feel free to add me and ask any questions as you go along :)
