heart rate monitors

I want to get a hrm so I can accurately record calories burned but I don't know where to start. Anybody have recommendations for ones that aren't too expensive?

I tried many but you should go with POLAR....Garmin and Suunto are great too but more expensive.

I use the Polar FT4 and it's perfect. Comes in many colors and it does everything that you will need.
Do not take a model without a chest strap! If you want accurate results...it's REQUIRED!...FT4 come with one.

I have the Polar FT60 and I love it! I would recommend going to Polar's site and comparing the products. A friend bought the FT7 a few weeks back and it is pretty basic. Another friend bought the FT60 recently and loves it. You can find it online for about $120 and it is well worth the price! :)

Polar definitely! I've owned mine for more than 2 yrs and it works super well even though I'm not particularly careful with it. It's definitely something that can last a decade.
  • i have heard a ton about polar watches and garmins. they are the most popular brands. i would really recommend one of those. if you try to buy cheap (like i did) then you are most likely going to get HIGHLY inaccurate readings.

also watches with chest straps are more accurate.

I am a huge Garmin fan but keep in mind that they are primarily GPS with a HR function, a little different than a dedicated HRM. Depending on the model you may or may not be able to use it without using the GPS function.

A great post with some helpful tips of things you want in a HRM

I own a Polar and it works pretty well. It's easy to navigate through. Make sure to get one with a chest strap. The nifty thing about them too is that if you are a cardio machine person, a lot of them are already programmed to work with the Polar chest straps so your HR shows up on the display and it's coming from the chest strap instead of those stupid hand readers on the treadmills, ellipticals and such. I don't wear mine much anymore, most of my cardio is running, so I just use my Garmin, but that is quite a bit pricier, especially when you have to pay for the chest strap.
